Once feared as incurable, leprosy or Hansen’s disease is now fully treatable, a testament to decades of progress in medical science and technology. Yet the hardest part to cure isn’t the disease, but the stigma that isolates and delays treatment.

This World Leprosy Day, let’s celebrate what MedTech innovation makes possible: early detection tools, better diagnostics, and integrated health systems that bring care closer to those who need it most. But let’s also challenge what technology alone cannot solve- bias, exclusion, and misinformation.

Innovation in healthcare is meaningful only when it serves both human health and human dignity; one without the other is an incomplete cure.

Commenting on this historic EU–India FTA, Mr. Pavan Choudary , Chairman, MTaI, said that for Europe, India represents a partner where long-horizon innovation, licensing, and manufacturing commitments can be anchored in a rule-of-law environment with predictable recourse, without being intimidated by any power, eastern or western.

“At MTaI, we believe that this landmark deal offers real potential to improve access and reduce costs for patients, with likely tariff cuts on European medical devices. This FTA will also enable India to strengthen its role as a reliable, innovation-driven partner- expanding exports of medical textiles, surgical instruments and disposables which India specializes in.”

Healthcare innovation thrives on data but earns its future through trust.
On World Data Protection Day (28 January), we reflect on what responsible innovation truly means.

With India’s DPDP Act and evolving AI ecosystem, MedTech stands to lead not
just through smarter diagnostics or digital tools, but through ethical data practices that respect every individual’s privacy.

Embedding consent, foresight, and accountability in every algorithm and device isn’t just policy compliance, it's good medicine in a digital world.

As India and the EU seal a historic FTA, our Chairman, Mr. Pavan Choudary, writes in Express Healthcare just ahead of this potentially transformative India–EU trade deal, highlighting both the near-term gains from tariff reduction and market access in healthcare and MedTech, and the longer-term opportunity in co-development, resilient supply chains and skilled manpower exports.

As India celebrates its 76th Republic Day, we reflect on the enduring values that shape our democracy and the collective systems that uphold its promise.

This day is not only a constitutional landmark, but a tribute to the institutions, sectors, and individuals working toward equity, resilience, and national wellbeing.

Healthcare stands as a cornerstone of that vision.
India’s MedTech sector continues to play a vital role in strengthening our health infrastructure, fostering indigenous innovation, and expanding access to quality care.

At MTaI, we remain committed to enabling this progress; through policy advocacy, stakeholder collaboration, and support for technologies that serve both people and purpose.

National Girl Child Day (24 January) is a reminder that empowering girls begins with protecting their health because health enables attendance, confidence, and opportunity.

Over time, programmes such as Beti Bachao Beti Padhao, Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK), Anemia Mukt Bharat, and Ayushman Bharat’s school health initiatives have strengthened the focus on education, nutrition, and adolescent care.

MedTech and digital health add an important bridge between plans and practical access. Simple tools and connected care can support menstrual health education, early detection, nutrition tracking, mental wellbeing, and teleconsultation especially for families in remote and underserved areas.

The lesson is straightforward: when support arrives early and consistently, outcomes improve across a girl’s life course. MTaI acknowledges the collective efforts government, communities, providers, and innovators working to make healthcare more equitable, preventive, and responsive for girls across India.

Speaking to The Economic Times , MTaI Chairman, Pavan Choudary highlighted a critical bottleneck in Indian healthcare: the high cost of medical technology due to excessive taxation.

With around 70% of medical devices in India currently being imported, the combination of high customs duties and the 5% health cess creates a financial burden that is ultimately passed on to the patient.

"For products where import substitution is still some time away, customs duty should be reduced to 2.5%," notes Mr. Choudary. He emphasized that lowering these barriers is essential to ensure that advanced, life-saving medical equipment remains accessible and affordable for all.
