Ringworm is a fungal infection of the skin, hair, or nails that causes a ringshaped rash. The rash is usually red, scaly, itchy, and has a clear center. The rash can appear on any part of the body, but it is more common on the scalp, feet, groin, and beard. Ringworm presents distinct symptoms including itchy, red circular rashes, and scaly skin, which are telltale signs of this fungal infection. On the scalp, it may lead to hair loss, urging those affected to seek antifungal treatments. Recognizing these symptoms early can lead to effective management of the infection, avoiding further spread and ensuring a quicker return to healthy skin. You can get ringworm by direct contact with an infected person, animal, object, or soil. You can also get ringworm by sharing clothing, towels, bedding, combs, or brushes with someone who has it. Anyone can get ringworm, but some people are more at risk, such as those who live in warm and humid climates, have a weak immune system, or participate in sports that involve skintoskin contact. Ringworm is treated with antifungal medications that can be applied to the skin or taken by mouth, depending on the location and severity of the infection. Treatment may last from two to four weeks or longer, depending on the response and the type of fungus.
