Every skin is different — and so is its treatment.

This week in clinic, we treated conditions like acne, psoriasis, ingrown hair (pili incarnati), oral fungal infection, and warts — each requiring a personalised approach based on the skin type, cause, and severity.

Many concerns may look similar, but treating them with random advice or trending routines can often make things worse.

📌 The right diagnosis is the first step to the right treatment.

Many skin conditions start small but progress quickly when ignored. Early diagnosis not only speeds up recovery but also prevents complications and spread.

In the past week, we treated several common skin conditions including Pityriasis Versicolor, Folliculitis, Scabies, Impetigo, and Traction Alopecia. Each of these conditions has distinct causes and treatments, which is why proper dermatological evaluation is important instead of self-medication.

If you notice persistent itching, rashes, hair loss, or unusual skin patches, it’s best to seek medical advice early.

🩺 Healthy skin begins with timely care.

Things I Won't Allow in My Home as a Dermatologist

Healthy skin starts with what you avoid, not just what you apply. As a dermatologist, these are a few things I never keep at home:

Fairness creams / bleaching agents - Many contain potent steroidal creams that can cause long-term skin damage.

• Scrubs of any kind - They create micro-tears and weaken the skin barrier.

• Loofahs / bath sponges - These can harbour bacteria and lead to folliculitis.

Face powder / talc - Can clog pores and trigger blackheads and acne.

Make-up wipes - Leave residue, strip natural oils, and disrupt the skin

barrier.

• Old mattresses and pillows - Harbour dust mites that can cause

allergies and worsen sleep and skin health.

Expired skincare - Ingredients break down and may cause irritation or

reactions.

• Hair removal creams - Often packed with harsh chemicals that can burn sensitive skin.

Microneedling / derma roller at home - Non-sterile needles can lead to infection, bleeding, and even scarring.

• Essential oils on the face - Highly fragranced and a common cause of skin irritation.

• Dirty makeup brushes / sponges - They harbour bacteria and can cause breakouts.

Healthy skin is about making the right choices daily.

Thinking about getting an aesthetic treatment? Before you trust any clinic with your skin, make sure you’re not ignoring these major red flags 🚩

1️⃣ No Qualified Doctor’s Degree Visible
If the clinic cannot clearly show the doctor’s name and medical degrees, that’s a serious concern. Transparency about qualifications is non-negotiable.

2️⃣ Before & After Photos with Different Lighting/Angles
Changing lighting, poses, or angles can make results look dramatic. If the lighting changes more than the skin, it may just be a marketing gimmick.

3️⃣ Practitioners Who Look Overfilled or Frozen
A practitioner’s face often reflects their treatment philosophy. If they appear pillow-faced or overly frozen, chances are their aesthetic approach might give similar results to patients.

4️⃣ Salons Offering Clinical Treatments
Medical aesthetic procedures require medical protocols, proper hygiene standards, emergency preparedness, and trained supervision.
Aesthetic treatments ≠ automatically safe.

Your skin is an investment, not an experiment. Choose your doctor and clinic wisely to avoid future regret.
