Nature Reviews Clinical Oncology: Distant metastasis remains a common cause of death in patients with solid tumours, even after treatment with surgery, radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy. Treatment itself can sometimes cause or promote metastasis by increasing the number of circulating tumour cells.
