Impact of prolonged spell of Rains on stubble burning ЁЯФе and :
1. Prolonged spells of rains in October have delayed the crop harvest (paddy) and farmers are left with less or no time to do preparation for another crop. Most of the potato sowing has to be done on or before Diwali week so this may trigger concentrated fires over next few days.
2. Emission rates of wet paddy will be much higher when compared to completely dried stubble. We may witness exponential rise in fires. Satellite mapping shows many fold increase in fires from 10th October to 13th October.
3. Change in wind directions and prolonged rains brought down the day temperatures which is favouring accumulation of air pollutants in morning hours.
4. 16th October onwards stubble burning will impact significantly the air quality in Delhi-NCR and to no underestimation of our local sources it will add to worse.
5. This year date of Diwali celebration is much before from peak of stubble burning week (1st week of November) and a strong thermal inversion. Hence there will be a drop in peak of Pm2.5 after Diwali when compared to previous years.
