🧠 *Awareness Programme on Schizophrenia*

Date: 23rd October 2025

Today, on 23rd October 2025, the *Department of Psychiatry, Government Medical College (GMC) Handwara* conducted a detailed presentation on *Schizophrenia* as part of its ongoing mental health education and awareness initiatives.

The session aimed to enhance understanding of schizophrenia — a chronic mental disorder affecting thoughts, emotions, and behavior. Staff members and students from the department discussed the clinical features, causes, treatment options, and psychosocial management of the illness. Emphasis was laid on early diagnosis, adherence to treatment, and community support as key factors in improving the quality of life of individuals affected by schizophrenia.

The presentation also highlighted the importance of reducing stigma, promoting empathy, and ensuring that mental health services are accessible and inclusive.

The session concluded with an interactive discussion, where participants shared insights and raised queries related to patient care and rehabilitation strategies.

💬 The Department reiterated its commitment to promoting mental health awareness, research, and compassionate care through continued educational and outreach activities.

*The Department of Psychiatry, in collaboration with the District Mental Health Unit (DMHP)* of Associated Hospital GMC Handwara, today conducted a Mental Health Awareness Programme at *District Jail Kupwara* as part of the ongoing World Mental Health Campaign.

The program aimed to sensitize inmates about the importance of mental well-being, early identification of psychological distress, and the availability of mental health services. Experts from the Department of Psychiatry delivered insightful talks on topics such as stress management, depression, substance use, anger control, and coping strategies for emotional resilience.

During the session, inmates were encouraged to openly discuss mental health concerns and seek timely help when needed. Interactive discussions and awareness materials were also shared to promote better understanding and self-care practices.

The initiative reflects the commitment of GMC Handwara’s Department of Psychiatry and the District Mental Health Unit towards extending mental health awareness and care to all sections of society, including those in correctional settings, in line with the vision of *“Mental Health for All.”*
