A wealthy 70-year-old farmer had been widowed for ten years. His first wife had given him three married daughters, but in his heart there still lived an unfulfilled desire: to have a son who would carry his surname and continue the family lineage.

For that reason, he decided to marry again. His new wife would be a 20-year-old young woman from a poor family in the village. She was pretty, fresh as spring, but trapped by poverty. Her parents, burdened with debts and a sick son, agreed to give their daughter in marriage in exchange for a large sum of money.
Resigned, with tears in her eyes, the young woman said to her mother before the wedding:
“I only hope he treats me well… I will fulfill my duty.”

The wedding was simple but noisy, as the old man wanted the whole village to know that he was still “vigorous” and ready to father a son. The neighbors whispered, criticizing the age difference, but he paid no attention. He smiled with satisfaction, hoping that soon his new wife would become pregnant. She, though her heart was chained by sorrow, pretended happiness to play the role that had been forced upon her.

The wedding night arrived. The old man, carefully dressed, drank some medicinal liquor which, according to him, would make him feel young again. He took the young woman by the hand and led her to the room, his eyes filled with expectation. She, trembling, forced a weak smile, trying not to disappoint him.

The atmosphere grew intimate, the old man whispered words of affection, and just at that moment… an unexpected incident occurred, leaving the young woman in shock.
