Spine problems can affect both children and adults, but the causes are very different.

5 Signs of Nerve Compression in the Spine You Should Not Overlook

Spine pain doesn’t always mean surgery.
But nerve pain should never be ignored.

What concerns me as a spine surgeon is not back pain alone,
but when nerve compression signs are missed or delayed.

Here are 5 warning signs of spinal nerve compression 👇

• Pain radiating from the neck/back to arm or leg
• Numbness or tingling in hands, legs, or feet
• Weakness in arm, leg, or foot (difficulty lifting or walking)
• Burning or electric-shock–like pain
• Loss of balance or reduced grip strength

Will the problem come back after spine surgery?

This is a very common question I hear from patients.

✔ Surgery is done only at the affected disc level, not the entire spine.
✔ After surgery, proper care for 2–3 months is extremely important.

What patients must follow:
• Avoid sitting on the floor
• Do not lift heavy weights
• Avoid sitting on chairs for long hours
• Maintain correct posture
• Ensure no continuous pressure on the spine

👉 If these precautions are followed sincerely, the chances of the problem recurring are very low.

Recovery doesn’t end in the OT; it continues with your daily habits.

A 44-year-old high-risk patient came with impending Cauda Equina Syndrome, a spine emergency that can lead to permanent paralysis if delayed.

Spine Surgery: Elders vs Babies: How Different Is It?

For older patients, spine surgery is usually more straightforward.
We can use standard screws, correct the deformity, and stabilise the spine safely.

But spine surgery in babies is completely different and extremely challenging.

👶 In infants:
• The bones are very small and delicate
• Regular screws cannot be used
• Special tiny neck screws are required
• There are very limited options
• Precision, experience, and confidence are critical

There is no room for error only expertise makes the difference.
