Anand Eye Institute’s main goal is to establish a world class training facility while delivering quality care to the local community. India is home to the highest number of blind people, both reversible blindness from cataracts and irreversible blindness from glaucoma, diabetes, macular degeneration and ocular infections. According to published data, it has been estimated that India needs 25,000 ophthalmologists by 2020 to achieve the goals of VISION 2020: The Right to Sight. India will need 300 new residents to graduate every year to help meet the growing demands of an aging population. AEI plans to enrol residents every year along with fellowship programs in glaucoma, cornea and retina and comprehensive ophthalmology. These programs will give doctors a chance to experiment and train using modern technology to make world-class specialists. By establishing a structured residency program, AEI will help train future ophthalmologists to address the growing burden of blindness and other vision-related disorders. With this training program, we hope to expand and improve the delivery of quality eye care to all sections of the Indian population.
