Active listening entails paying close attention to what your child or adolescent is saying and comprehending what they are saying. You can better understand your child's perspective and where they are coming from by actively listening to them. Additionally, it is a means of learning crucial details about your child's priorities.
Here are few tips to be a active listening
1. Get close when your child is speaking.
2. Use eye contact to show you’re listening.
3. Use non-verbal language to show you’re listening – for example, turn towards your child, and keep your arms uncrossed.
4. Turn off the TV, and put your mobile phone and other devices down.
Bring your mind back to what your child is saying if your thoughts wander off.
Use encouraging responses, such as:
‘‘Thank you for sharing that experience with me. It means a lot that you trusted me with this.”
“I assume it wasn’t easy for you.”
5. Keep a non-judgmental physical and vocal stance
6. Resist the urge to lean back and cross your arms
7. Resist the urge to frown
8. Keep your voice calm
9. Make sure the words you choose are positive and supportive
