Dr. Jagadeesh Reddy Bandi explains that aqueous humour plays a vital role in maintaining eye pressure and nourishing the cornea and lens. Increased pressure damages the optic nerve, leading to glaucoma, often called the silent thief of vision as vision loss is gradually devoid of symptoms. This makes early screening crucial.
Glaucoma screening involves advanced diagnostics such as intraocular pressure measurement, retina and fundus examinations, visual field testing, etc. In case of any suspicion, gonioscopy is done to assess the drainage angle, optical coherence tomography (OCT) is done to study retinal layers. These tools help detect glaucoma early and accurately classify it as mild, moderate, or severe protecting vision before it’s too late.
