In my recent interview with MedPlus OneTV (aired Nov 27, 2025), we addressed a startling reality: Cancer is rapidly overtaking heart disease and infections as a leading cause of death in India, with over 15 lakh new cases annually.
Why is this happening? While environmental factors are often blamed, they contribute only 2-3%. The real drivers are closer to home:
Westernization: A shift towards processed, non-vegetarian diets and a decline in physical activity.
The To***co Epidemic: Smoking and chewing to***co (Gutka/Pan Masala) alone contribute to 33% of all cancer cases in India.
The Economic Paradox: We are in a situation where the revenue generated from to***co sales is far less than the astronomical cost the country spends treating to***co-related diseases. If we could ban to***co, we could prevent nearly 5 lakh cancer cases every year.
