LE cell (lupus erythematous cell)
LE cell is usually neutrophil which has ingested the altered nucleus of another cell (neutrophil). It is most commonly seen in connective tissue disorder that occurs more frequently in women of child bearing age. The degenerative tissue release a protein into blood stream that acts as antigen. The protein produces autoantibody against own body.
The pathological condition is called auto-immune disease. These antibody are known as LE factor which are antinuclear and IgG in nature. LE factor (antibody) release an enzyme deoxyribonuclease which depolymerize the DNA of the nucleus of neutrophil. As a result spherical homogeneous mass is formed, which is called LE body. It is engulfed by other neutrophils and forms LE cell. LE cell consists neutrophil, containing a large spherical homogeneous body which stain pale purple with Romanowsky's stain. The nucleus of cell is usually displaced to one side and may appear to be wrapped.
