Ideally pregnancy should be planned 18 months after bariatric surgery.
Abortion and low birth weight risks are high if pregnancy is planned early.
But several females who were suffering from long standing infertility due to excess weight, may accidentally conceive within few months after undergoing bariatric surgery.
We will explain the risks associated with early pregnancy and if they are willing to continue pregnancy, advise them to take adequate protein diet, vitamin and mineral supplements and close monitoring by the treating gynaecologist is advised.
Since they have been waiting for a long time to conceive, it is appropriate to give a chance to continue pregnancy when they conceived.
I have patients who conceived within a month after bariatric surgery and continued pregnancy under close monitoring and surprisingly delivered normal weight healthy babies.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy with Duodenal Transit Bipartition is a modification of Single Anastomosis Duodenoileal Bypass with Sleeve (Sleeve with Loop Duodenal Switch) without exclusion of proximal small intestine. It is one of the most effective Sleeve with Diversion Surgery.
It is a type of transit bipartition bariatric & metabolic surgery, where hormonal and physiological changes required for long lasting significant weight loss and long term diabetes remission are achieved without the need to exclude any part of small intestine.
Anastomosis is midway between duodenojejunal flexure and ileocecal junction - 50:50 bipartition. Anastomosis can be performed by hand sewn (sutured) method or stapled method. In this video I demonstrated hand stapled anastomosis.
Maintaining natural pathway allows endoscopic access to biliary system and reduces risk of malnutrition.
Risk of dumping syndrome is less.
Anastomosis is post pyloric, so risk of marginal ulcers and bile pooling in the stomach is significantly less. Undigested food enters ileum through loop duodenoileal anastomosis, reaching terminal ileum rapidly, leading to maximal incretin response.
This surgery reduces malnutrition significantly while maintaining efficacy.

When can a women in child bearing age conceive after bariatric surgery?

Ideal time to plan for pregnancy is 18 months after bariatric surgery.
Bariatric surgery greatly improves fertility and pregnancy outcomes.
But during weight loss period after surgery, food intake is less and nutrients will be insufficient for the the baby growth.
During pregnancy, make sure to take protein diet, adequate vitamins and minerals to support healthy pregnancy.
