ओ सी डी एक चिंता करने वाली बीमारी है, जिसमें पीड़ित शख्स किसी बात की जरूरत-से-ज्यादा चिंता करने लगता है। एक ही जैसे अनचाहे ख्याल उसे बार- बार आते हैं और एक ही काम को बार-बार दोहराना चाहता है। ऐसे लोगों को सनक वाले ख्याल आते हैं और अपने बिहेवियर पर कोई कंट्रोल नहीं होता। ऐसे मरीज न खुद को रोक पाते हैं, न ही बेफिक्र रह पाते हैं।
ओसीडी से दिमाग किसी एक ख्याल या काम पर अटक जाता है। मसलन, यह कन्फर्म करने के लिए कि गैस बंद है या नहीं, आप 20 बार स्टोव की नॉब चेक करते हैं। तब तक हाथ धोते रहते हैं, जब तक कि वह छिल न जाए या आप तब तक गाड़ी भगाते रहते हैं, जब तक कि आपको यह संतुष्टि न हो जाए कि जिस शख्स ने पीछे से हॉर्न दिया था, वह पीछा तो नहीं कर रहा।
