Old age is an inevitable and important stage of life, where individuals pass on their wisdom, experiences, and values to society. While this phase is often seen as one of reflection and contribution, it also brings unique challenges. Among the most common yet often overlooked issues are anxiety and depression, which can deeply affect the mental and emotional well-being of older adults. Addressing these concerns is vital to ensure that seniors enjoy a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life in their golden years. Studies suggest that anxiety and depression impact nearly 10–20% of people aged 65 and above, making it a growing public health concern.

The causes of these mental health challenges can be multifaceted, often arising from a combination of biological, psychological, and social factors. Some common causes include:
Causes of Anxiety and Depression in Older Adults
Health Issues – Chronic illnesses such as diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, or neurological conditions can lead to physical discomfort and emotional distress.

Medication Side Effects – Certain medications prescribed for age-related health conditions may trigger mood changes, anxiety, or depressive symptoms.

Loss and Bereavement – The death of a spouse, close friends, or family members often leads to grief, loneliness, and emotional pain.

Social Isolation – Reduced mobility, retirement, or children living away can cause feelings of loneliness and abandonment.

Cognitive Decline – Memory loss or early stages of dementia may contribute to confusion, frustration, and depression.

Financial Stress – Limited income post-retirement or unexpected medical expenses can heighten anxiety levels.
