On Time Vaccination matters!!
COVID-19 has already taught us the crisis associated with an infectious communicable disease. Therefore it becomes much more important for parents to get their child vaccinated at least against those for which vaccines are currently available.
Some of the benefits of vaccination are as under-
• It can save the life of a child: Some extremely lethal diseases have been eliminated completely due to proper vaccination and others are close to eradication. For example Polio was the most feared disease, causing death and paralysis, but today, thanks to vaccination, there are no new cases of polio in India since last 7 years.
• It protects the child from serious illness and complications of vaccine-preventable diseases which can include amputation of an arm or leg, paralysis of limbs, hearing loss, convulsions, brain damage, and death.
• It can prevent the outbreaks of preventable diseases. However if parents are unable to vaccinate their child the result could be tremendous damage in our young population. This is also the risk associated with deprivation of vaccination due to Covid-19 crisis in the past two months.
• Vaccination is very safe and effective: Vaccines are the outcome of long clinical trials by the authorities. They may produce a transient discomfort such as pain, redness, or tenderness at the site of injection but this is negligible in comparison to the problems associated with these diseases
• Immunization saves the family time and money: By preventing the morbidity and mortality associated with diseases, immunization saves the time and money loss by reducing the hospital stay and medical bills.
• Immunization protects future generations: Vaccines have reduced the disability and mortality, which were significantly much more in the era when vaccines were not available. Small pox vaccine is a good example to understand the importance of vaccine.
• It is also protecting against the exposure to an infectious disease through travelers. Few diseases are quite common in other countries and are brought to India by international travelers. COVID-19 is a classical example of it! If there had been a vaccine for Covid-19, no such crisis would have occurred in our country.
So why not protect our children by timely immunization, at least against the diseases where vaccines are available.
