CLEFT LIP/ PALATE & MALNUTRITION

There are high chances of developing malnutrition in children born with cleft lip & palate because of obvious reasons. Malnutrition in these children may delay their lip/palate surgery & also affect the outcome of surgeries, therefore it should be treated as soon as it is diagnosed. Timely consultation, proper feeding advice, nutritional supplements, hygiene methods & meticulous follow-up can correct the malnutrition & help us in achieving desirable results of the surgery.

Correction of Unclear Speech in Clefts

Even after having a successful cleft palate surgery, a child may have unclear speech for various reasons. Most of the times, it can be rectified with speech therapy but sometimes the child may need additional surgical procedure specially if he/she develops VPI (Velo Pharyngeal Insufficiency). VPI usually get diagnosed after the age of 5 years by Videofluoroscopy+/-Nasoendoscopy, & can be corrected well surgically.

Nose Correction in Cleft Children (Pre-school Rhinoplasty)

When a child is born with cleft lip, his/her nose remains depressed on one side. This depression of nose can be corrected up to certain extent during lip surgery. The complete correction of nose (Cosmetic Rhinoplasty) is performed at around 18 years of age. In few cases, especially when nose looks quite depressed even after lip surgery, it can be corrected to some extent before the child starts going to school (around 4 years of age).
