Thyroid Disorders Treatment in Ayurveda

Commonly thyroid abnormalities are hyperthyroidism/ thyrotoxicosis, hypothyroidism & thyoiditis.
Hypothyroidism is also known as hypo metabolic state due to deficiency of thyroid hormones [t3, t4] & increased TSH.

Clinical features
Weight loss in spite of increased appetite
Nervousness, tremor
Wide-eyed gaze, lid lag
Warm, moist & flushed skin
Tachycardia, palpitations, atrial arrhythmias, cardiomegaly, cardiac failure
Skeletal muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, fatty liver disease

Hyperthyroidism/thyrotoxicosis is also known as hyper metabolic state due to increased levels of thyroid hormones [t3, t4] & low TSH level.

Clinical features
Weight gain
Nervousness, insomnia, apathy, slowing down of mental activities
Wide-eyed gaze, peri-orbital puffiness, enlargement of tongue
Dry, rough skin
Tachycardia, palpitations, atrial arrhythmias, cardiomegaly, cardiac failure
Skeletal muscle atrophy, osteoporosis, slowing of physical activities & fatigue, constipation, flatulence, fatty liver disease

Thyoiditis [focal or diffuse enlargement of gland] may be infectious, riedel’s fibro sing thyoiditis, hashimoto’s disease, sub acute granulomatous thyoiditis & lymphocytic thyoiditis.
Anti-thyroid antibodies are antibodies as part of an autoimmune response in which body attacks parts of the thyroid.

TSH-receptor antibodies stimulate it to make more thyroid hormone. This in turn can lead to hyperthyroidism.

Anti-thyroid peroxidises (anti-TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin antibodies cause the destruction of thyroid cells and may cause hypothyroidism. These antibodies are found in Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

 A process of constant wear tear is continues in our body. In young age the repair and wearing process is faster that’s why we have maximum tissue strength & functioning strength in young age but as the age advances , the tearing process fastens leading to reduced tissue strength and reduced functioning capacity of that part of the body. This is called degenerated part. Following are the most commonly seen degenerative diseases of the body.
 Osteoarthritis (O.A.) of the Knee joint -In which cartilages over the femur and tibia are worn out which causes increased friction of these bones over each other & causes lots of pain, difficulty to walk. If this process of degeneration is not arrested, then one day there will be complete degeneration of the cartilages and also of the menisci and person will be unable to walk without support. Many of them will also need a knee replacement surgery.

Ayurveda treatment for osteoarthritis (O.A.) It is a known and proven fact that all painkillers are very dangerous especially for diabetics, hypertensive and for heart patients as they cause damage to vital organs like kidney (thereby causing kidney failure.) Internal linings of stomach (thereby causing gastritis, acidity, bleeding) furthermore painkillers it selves increase the process of degeneration hence, as far as possible one should avoid taking painkillers for more than few days. In Ayurveda there are no strong painkillers but various herbs prevent cartilage damages and arrests the further progress of osteoarthritis. Continues usage of good, standardized herbal preparations for Osteoarthritis for few days to weeks definitively reduces the pain and swelling and our herbal medicines do not have any organo-toxic side effects. Along with oral medications, sometimes we also advise patient to do Panchakarma for arthritis for better outcome.

Ayurveda treatment for Alzheimer’s & Parkinson - These are degenerative diseases of the brain. There are certain herbs like Turmeric & ashwagandha help a lot to these patients in reducing their symptoms and preventing further deterioration. AYURVEDA PAIN RELIEF THERAPIES IN INDORE

Podikizhi
Podi means powder (herbs/medicated powder) and Kizhi means bag. It is a method of fomentation in which cotton bags filled with hot mixture are used and are rhythmically dabbed and massaged over the body. It is a therapy done with a poultice of powdered herbs which is immersed in hot medicated oil and then used to massage the required part of the body or the whole body. It works as an effective treatment for rheumatism, joint pain, slip disc, sciatica, frozen shoulder, back pain, spondylitis, and muscular pains inflammation etc.

Navarakizhi
Navara is a type of rice and Kizhi means poultice. Navara rice is cooked in decoction of Bala etc and then tied into a kizhi which is made of kora cloth. The kizhi is dipped in herbal decoctions and is rhythmically dabbed all over the body. It is an immune-enhancing treatment. It is effective in neurological problems, muscular wasting, and rheumatic disorders like joint and muscular pain.

Diagnosis of Liver Diseases in Ayurveda

Since Liver is connected to almost all organs, impairment of its functions can be caused by various causes. Infections, incorrect lifestyle and eating habits, alcohol abuse, drugs, pollution etc are the main causes identified as responsible for liver diseases. The arena of liver diseases is extensive ranging from acute hepatitis to cirrhosis and carcinoma of Liver. Conventionally Blood investigations, Ultrasound, MRI etc are used to diagnose the exact cause and type of liver disease.

These investigations are essential but not enough to treat them with Ayurvedic medicines. Ayurvedic treatment does not mean merely using herbs in place of chemicals. It is the thought process based on Doshic philosophy involved in interpreting the symptoms and deciding the pathogenesis by ascertaining the causes and choosing medicines or modes of treatment accordingly that makes the differentiation, for this Ayurvedic interpretation of these diseases is essential because Ayurvedic medicines are designed to act according to Ayurvedic Diagnosis. Hence it is essential to make an Ayurvedic diagnosis of these diseases.

Panchakarma: Rejuvenating Detoxification

Panchakarma is a Sanskrit word meaning “five actions or treatments.” As the primary method of detoxification in Ayurveda, Panchakarma rids the body of toxic materials left by disease and poor nutrition. It also expels excess doshas from the body. Therapies are individualized based upon constitutional types, doshic imbalances, age, digestive strength, immune status, season, and a host of other factors. Panchakarma promotes deep purification within the tissues, using safe, gentle methods.

Preparatory treatments to Panchakarma include light fasting, steam therapy, herbalized oil massage, and the intake of herbal decoctions or oils. These procedures help loosen accumulated toxins (ama), which then enter the major channels of the body for elimination. The five primary treatments of elimination include: herb-induced emesis or vomiting (vamana), herb-induced purgation (virechana), herbal decoction e***a (asthapana basti), medicated oil e***a (anuvasana basti), and the nasal administration of medication (nasya). Depending on an individual’s needs, all five or only select treatments are used. There are also several adjunct treatments, such as the luxurious shirodhara, in which a continuous stream of warm oil is gently poured between the eyebrows (on the “third eye”) of the patient.

Like any medical procedure, Panchakarma begins with an initial consultation by a qualified health professional, who can determine an individual’s prakruti (birth constitution), the nature of the health problem, and the appropriate therapies. Ayurveda also recommends Panchakarma for healthy individuals as a preventative measure, particularly at the junction points between the seasons.
