The lead author Megan Finch-Edmondson, PhD, explains simply: “Cord blood is fantastic because it is backed now by strong scientific evidence to show that it not only is safe, but it also can provide benefit for children living with cerebral palsy.” How does it work? “The cells in cord blood can release supportive factors that can actually help to repair a brain injury, and a brain injury as we know is what causes cerebral palsy.”

Studies have shown that umbilical cord blood is safe and effective when accompanied with the right therapy. As our clinical knowledge of cord blood treatment evolves, we want to be able to respond appropriately to make cord blood more widely available to children with CP in Australia either via necessary research or compassionate access.

In six to 12 months of follow-up, the participants haven’t reported complications related to the therapy, according to the company. All those treated showed significant improvements in key measures, such as increased on time, which is when symptoms are adequately controlled, and reduced motor and non-motor symptoms, as reflected by lower scores in the Movement Disorder Society-Unified Parkinson’s Disease Rating Scale.

The therapy utilizes induced pluripotent stem cells, a versatile type of cell that can be developed into nearly any other cell type.

By injecting neural stem cells at the injury site, the researchers aimed to regenerate the nerve connections lost due to injury.

The main goal was to assess the safety of this approach. No serious adverse events were observed in the four adult male patients, who received the stem cell injections within 14–28 days of their initial injury.

Two patients showed motor improvement: one patient can now stand, while the other can move their arms and legs.

हैपलोइडेंटिकल बोन मैरो ट्रांसप्लांट (BMT) एक स्टेम सेल प्रत्यारोपण प्रक्रिया है जिसमें डोनर एक आंशिक मेल खाने वाला (हैपलोइडेंटिकल) रिश्तेदार होता है, जो आमतौर पर माता-पिता, भाई-बहन या संतान हो सकता है। यह प्रक्रिया उन मरीजों के लिए विशेष रूप से उपयोगी होती है जिन्हें पूर्ण रूप से मेल खाने वाला डोनर नहीं मिल पाता।

In June 2023, in an operation that lasted less than half an hour, they injected the equivalent of roughly 1.5 million islets into the woman’s abdominal muscles — a new site for islet transplants.
Two-and-a-half months later, the woman was producing enough insulin to live without needing top-ups, and she has sustained that level of production for more than a year. By that time, the woman had stopped experiencing the dangerous spikes and drops in blood glucose levels, which remained within a target range for more than 98% of the day. “That’s remarkable,” says Daisuke Yabe, a diabetes researcher at Kyoto University. “If this is applicable to other patients, it’s going to be wonderful.”

She is the first person with type 1 diabetes to receive this kind of transplant.
