Auditory Training

Auditory Training is a intervention method that aims to help the individuals with hearing impairment in improving their auditory skills through structured and repetitive listening exercises.

Hence, listening exercises are an integral part of Auditory Training programs. Erber(1982) proposed a hierarchy of listening skills outlining four levels of Auditory skills:
1. Sound Detection/ Awareness
2. Sound Discrimination
3. Sound Identification
4. Sound Comprehension

It is recommended that a child with hearing impairment should progress through these four levels. Good quality hearing aids or cochlear implants make it easy for the child to make use of his/her auditory abilities.

About Speech-language Therapy

It is a remedy for communication disorders.

The main objectives of Speech-language Therapy is to bring about an overall improvement in the communication skills including the speech and language skills. Its' goal is to improve skills that will allow the particular person to communicate more effectively.

But the person should show an improvement not just in the clinical setting or in the therapy session, the improvement should also generalize to his/her real world such as home, school, work, and in the community.

Each individual will have a different outcome depending on his or her particular challenges and abilities. Also, it is influenced by factors such as the nature and severity of the disorder, the age of that particular person, and most importantly, the extent of training provided at home by the family members as well as personal and cultural characteristics of both the person and the therapist.

The most important thing that should be remembered that overcoming a speech and language disorder can take time and effort, so the parents and the family members should be patient and understand the affected person.

Most of the parents are concerned about the 'Speech sound norms' i.e., on what age group, which speech sound a child should acquired?

There is a standardized test named 'Goldman Friestoe Test of Articulation (2000) where the speech sound norms are given in standard form. It can be a useful tool for the parents and teachers when it comes to setting expectation of a child's speech. The chart is attached below.

Note: Use this as a general guide only. Remember every child is unique. Sometimes it may differ.

Many children exhibit some speech sound errors and the parents wonder about what is the normal for children of the similar age group. Basically, these speech sound errors are seen in four different types, in a nutshell, called SODA. SODA refers
Substitution: one sound is replicated to another sound. Eg., 'labbit' for 'rabbit'

Omission: a sound in the word is omitted. Eg., 'hose' for 'horse'

Distortion: a sound is produced in an unfamiliar way. Eg., 'ssssun' for 'sun'

Addition: an extra sound is inserted within the word. Eg., 'buhlack' for 'black'

We should identify these errors first, after that we can plan the intervention plan for the particular child. Below is a list of speech sounds with the age range which depicts the average age range when a child should mastery in the production of particular speech sounds.
