Are you taking care of your eyes? February is Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) Awareness Month, and Dr. Amit Zope, eye doctor from Best Eye Hospital in Kalyan, Atharva Eye Care & Laser Centre, explains why it's important to be aware of this eye disease.
AMD is a leading cause of vision loss in people aged 50 and older. It affects the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.
There are two types: dry AMD, which progresses slowly, and wet AMD, which can cause rapid vision loss. Signs of AMD include blurred or distorted vision, dark spots in the central vision, and difficulty seeing in low-light conditions. Risk factors include ageing, smoking, family history, and high blood pressure.
Preventive measures include regular eye checkups, a healthy diet rich in leafy greens and fish, wearing sunglasses with UV protection, and avoiding smoking.
