This is a cervical fibroid I removed from a 28 year old woman in India just before I shifted to Dubai last year. She came with sudden inability to pass urine and had no symptoms/ no idea that she had such a large tumor in her uterus.
So, what are fibroids?
Uterine fibroids are the most common non cancerous tumors in women of reproductive age. They can be single or multiple, small or large. In 1 out of 3 women, they cause symptoms like heavy menstrual bleeding, bleeding in between periods, pain during periods,frequent urge to urinate , pain during s*x and a feeling of pressure over the pelvis.
If you have these symptoms please contact your doctor for a scan.
Or they may be diagnosed incidently during a routine gynaec check up. For women who have symptomatic fibroids, there are medical treatments as well as surgical ones. Removal of fibroids (MYOMECTOMY) , removal of the uterus ( HYSTERECTOMY) or destruction of the fibroid without removal ( Uterine Artery Embolisation or MRI guided laser ablation) are just some of the options. Talk to your doctor to find out what is best suitable for you.

PCOS or polycystic ovarian disease is a very common condition in today's world. Prevalence is 5-18% in reproductive age women. 1 in 6 teenage girls are diagnosed with PCO.
Common presentation is with irregular menstrual cycles ( usually delayed), signs of excess androgens ( male hormone) like acne , excess facial and body hair, baldness and bulky or polycystic ovaries.
Women with PCOD, if untreated are at increased risk for infertility, obesity, metabolic syndrome, depression , sleep apnea, diabetes, fatty liver. During pregnancy, they may suffer from miscarriages, GDM and preterm labor.
PCOD may run in families
Lifestyle modification is the mainstay of management. Lose weight if you are overweight. Eat healthy. Exercise more.
If you want to conceive, losing 5% of your body weight may be enough to start ovulating and to conceive.
Bith control pills are the first line of treatment for women who donot want to conceive.
PCOD presents with a wide variety of symptoms and treatment needs to be tailored according to these.
