പ്രമേഹം കണ്ണിലെ റെറ്റിനയെ ബാധിക്കുന്ന ഒരു അവസ്ഥയാണ്, ഇതിനെ ഡയബറ്റിക് റെറ്റിനോപ്പതി എന്ന് പറയുന്നു. ഉയർന്ന രക്തത്തിലെ പഞ്ചസാരയുടെ അളവ് കാരണം റെറ്റിനയിലെ രക്തക്കുഴലുകൾക്ക് കേടുപാടുകൾ സംഭവിക്കുകയും കാഴ്ച നഷ്ടപ്പെടാൻ ഇടയാകുകയും ചെയ്യുന്നു. ഈ അവസ്ഥയുടെ ആദ്യ ഘട്ടങ്ങളിൽ ലക്ഷണങ്ങൾ കാണാറില്ല, അതിനാൽ കൃത്യമായ ഇടവേളകളിൽ നേത്രപരിശോധന നടത്തേണ്ടത് അത്യാവശ്യമാണ്. പ്രമേഹം നിയന്ത്രിക്കുന്നതിലൂടെ ഈ പ്രശ്നം ഒരു പരിധി വരെ തടയാൻ സാധിക്കും.
