FAQS

How does the breast cancer start?

The normal cell replicates in an orderly fashion. This process is very intricately governed by various check points to ensure that the new daughter cells are an exact replica of the mother cell.
If there is a rogue cell it is repaired or removed from the cell cycle. Sometimes these checkpoints fail and the rogue cell escapes and starts dividing and growing compromising the function of the normal cells. This eventually takes over vital organs and causes damage.

SELF EXAMINATION

About Breast Cancer

Every woman should get used to the texture and appearance of her own breasts. Breasts form during puberty and keep changing throughout a women’s reproductive life. Breast undergoes physiological change with every period, pregnancy and during breast feeding. With menopause most of the milk producing tissue disappears and gets replaced by fat.

Personal breast awareness and routine screening is the key to early detection of any possible problems.

It is a good idea to look at you breasts in the mirror at least once a month after periods. Before periods it is very common for most women to experience some breast tenderness, lumpiness and discomfort. Checking at this time could cause anxiety as it is tender, uncomfortable and lumpy. Therefore, Breast self-examination should be practiced once a month after periods. In women who do not menstruate, any day on a regular basis is sufficient.

Don’t look for trouble. Know what is normal. If normal is known, then trouble becomes easy to spot.

Look in the mirror :

Look at yourself in the mirror, with arms down, with palms squeezed at the chin level and with arms up When you are familiar with what is normal then a change is easy to spot.

Touch and check your breasts:

It is also important to know how your breasts feel. In the days before periods, most women find their breast slightly painful and lumpy. This gets better after periods. Use the flat of your hand to check the breasts and the underarm area while you shower. Use soap, cream or oil to help you feel the texture of your breasts better.

Feel your breasts while standing up and lying down -

using your right hand to feel your left breast and then your left hand to feel your right breast. Keep your fingers firm and at the same time use smooth touches. Do this by using the first few fingers of your hand. Keep your fingers together and flat.

Cover the entire breast from top to bottom, side to side – from your collarbone to the top of the abdomen, and from your armpit to your cleavage.

When you are familiar with the way your breasts look and feel normally, then a change is perceived easily. It is better not to do a self- examination looking for problems as they are described in most other portals ( ie) look for lumps, skin changes or discharge . When you keep looking for trouble, everything seems like trouble.

So my advice is to know what is normal, then if there is an abnormality then it is perceived easily.

What is breast cancer?

Most cancers in the breast originate from the cells that line the milk-producing glands and ducts with the cyclical hormonal influence the cells lining the milk glands and the ducts keep replicating normally at a controlled pace, throughout one's reproductive cycle. During this cell division and replication process, things may go wrong and abnormalities in the cells may occur. The body has a method of removing the abnormal cells from the cell division cycle. Sometimes the abnormal cells survive and continue to proliferate in an uncontrolled fashion. These proliferating abnormal cells also need the blood supply and nutrients to grow. As it keeps growing, some of these cells may enter the circulation and have the potential to seed itself and grow in bones, brain, liver, and lung resulting in a compromise of function in vital organs like liver or lungs.

breast-cancer

It is still not very clear why this happens in some women more than others. About 5-10 % of breast cancers are thought to occur because of inherited genetic mutation. Reproductive risk factors such as early onset of periods, late menopause, infertility, hormone replacement therapy, late first pregnancy, obesity account for about 25 % of breast cancers. The statistical models that are used to estimate a woman’s risk are often based on western statistics and may not be relevant to our population.

The incidence of breast cancer in India is lower than in the west. However rapid industrialization and changing lifestyle and dietary habits, fertility patterns, etc., are making Indian women more susceptible to the disease. The incidence is increasing in India.

Breast development in girls begins around 10 to 11 years of age although sometimes it might be earlier or later. They are essentially made up of milk producing glands and ducts that carry the milk to the ni**le. These glands and ducts are supported by a framework of fat and fibrous tissue which give the shape and contour to the breast. The ovaries produce a hormone called oestrogen and progesterone , which contribute to the development of milk producing glands and ducts with the supporting fat.

There are a lot of myths and misconceptions over what is a normal breast. The breasts naturally come in many different shapes and sizes. Like no two individuals are alike (except probably twins) no two pairs of breasts are identical.

During pregnancy, a woman’s breasts will get much bigger and may double in size, as the milk producing cells multiply and the ducts develop and expand. The ni**les get darker in colour and all these changes happen in response to various hormones that are produced when she is pregnant.

As we age, all our body tissues begin to lose their elasticity, and the breasts tend to sag.

During a woman’s lifetime there are many disorders that affect breast. In the younger age group, lumps that are called fibroadenoma’s are very common. During breast feeding, breast infections like mastitis or breast abscess may form. As the woman gets older, she may develop cysts which come and go, particularly around the menopausal age or develop a breast cancer. A healthy awareness about one’s own breast is important. What it means in practice is getting used to the appearance and texture of one’s own breast. When you know what is normal, then abnormal becomes easy to spot.
