Hello everyone.
The last few months have been frustrating both for parents and children due to recent surge in influenza infection amongst children.
As a pediatrician, I would like to take a moment to educate you about influenza, commonly known as the flu. Influenza is a viral infection that affects the respiratory system, and it can be quite serious for young children. Symptoms of the flu include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headaches, and fatigue. The flu is highly contagious and can be spread through coughing, sneezing, and touching contaminated surfaces.
In India, influenza virus circulation usually peaks during monsoon season (June-September) with secondary peaks during winter (November-February)
As I tell my patients all the time, prevention should be the top priority. So here are some of the measures you can take to protect your child from the flu :
1. Get vaccinated: The flu vaccine is the most effective way to prevent the flu. It is recommended for everyone over six months of age, and it is especially important for children and those with weakened immune systems.
2. Practice good hygiene: Encourage your children to wash their hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing, or blowing their nose. Alcohol based hand sanitizer can be used if soap and water are not available.
3. Cover coughs and sneezes: Teach your children to cover their mouths and noses with a handkerchief or their elbow when they cough or sneeze to prevent the spread of germs.
4. Avoid close contact with sick individuals: If someone in your household is sick, try to keep your children away from them as much as possible. If your child is sick, keep them home from school until they are feeling better.
5. Keep your child's environment clean: Regularly clean and disinfect the toys and area where the child usually plays.
If you have any concerns or questions about the flu, please do not hesitate to contact me or your local pediatrician.
Stay well.
