🧬 Metabolic Disorders

πŸ”΄ Metabolic Acidosis

Cause: ↑ acid or ↓ bicarbonate
Examples: Diarrhea, renal failure, DKA
Effect: ↑H⁺ & ↓HCO₃⁻ β†’ Acidic

πŸ”΅ Metabolic Alkalosis

Cause: ↓ acid or ↑ bicarbonate
Examples: Vomiting, NG suction, antacids

Essential Drugs Every Medical Student Must Know

1. Aspirin

Dose: 162–325 mg

Use: Antiplatelet in heart attack, stroke prevention.

Caution: Avoid in children (risk of Reye’s syndrome).

2. Epinephrine

Dose: 0.3–0.5 mg IM

Use: Anaphylaxis, cardiac arrest.

Caution: Watch for arrhythmias.

3. Atropine

Dose: 1 mg IV

Use: Bradycardia, organophosphate poisoning.

Caution: Monitor heart rate.

4. Morphine

Dose: 2–10 mg IV

Use: Severe pain, acute coronary syndrome (ACS).

Caution: May cause respiratory depression.

5. Naloxone

Dose: 0.4–2 mg IV/IM/IN

Use: Opioid overdose antidote.

Caution: Repeat dosing may be needed.

6. Amoxicillin

Dose: 500 mg TID

Use: Bacterial infections.

Caution: Adjust dose in renal disease.

7. Furosemide

Dose: 20–80 mg IV/PO

Use: Heart failure, edema.

Caution: Risk of hypokalemia.

8. Metoprolol

Dose: 25–100 mg BID

Use: Hypertension, angina.

Caution: Avoid in acute heart failure.
