Many patients who take insulin or diabetes medication often worry about how alcohol fits into their routine. Dr. Tom Babu, Diabetologist & Endocrinologist at Silverline Hospital, clears the confusion with simple, practical advice.

Having one or two small drinks once or twice a week is acceptable for most people, but never skip your medication or insulin while drinking. On days you consume alcohol, take all tablets and insulin after food, even the ones usually taken before meals. Bedtime insulin should not be missed under any circumstances.

For some patients, alcohol can actually lower blood sugar, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. So before going to bed, check your sugar levels. If it’s low, have a small snack to stay safe.

* Do not skip your diabetes medication
* Take tablets and insulin after food on drinking days
* Do not miss bedtime insulin
* Check your sugar before sleep and snack if it’s low

Dark chocolate കഴിക്കുന്നതിന്റെ ഗുണങ്ങൾ

Many people think dark chocolate is automatically safe for diabetes, but as Dr. Tom Babu, Diabetologist & Endocrinologist at Silverline Hospital and Ms. Aswathy M (Diabetes Educator, Silverline Hospital) explain, it’s not that simple.

Dark chocolate can help widen blood vessels and support heart health because of its flavanols. But the real question is: how much cocoa does it contain?

Most commercial “dark chocolates” still contain plenty of milk and sugar, making them unsafe for diabetic patients. The safer choice is bitter dark chocolate with 70% or more cocoa, since higher cocoa means lower sugar and lower milk content.

* Always read the label.
* More cocoa = safer.
* More sugar and milk = not diabetic-friendly.

Conducted World Diabetes Day Free Medical Camp

Silverline Hospital, in association with YMCA Ernakulam South Branch, successfully conducted a well-attended World Diabetes Day Free Medical Camp on 9 November 2025 at YMCA Kadavanthra.

The programme commenced with a warm welcome by P.K. George, Convener – Social Service, followed by the Presidential Address delivered by CA. Shawn Jeff Christopher, Chairman, YMCA South Area Branch. The inaugural session featured insightful talks by Dr. Tom Babu (Endocrinologist), Dr. Pratibha (Physician), Neeth Pradeep (Nutritionist), and Navya (Physiotherapist). Felicitation was offered by Oommen Philip, Vice President, KIIRWA. The event concluded with a Vote of Thanks by Athul Lal, Asst. Secretary, YMCA South Area Branch, marking the programme’s successful completion.
