A 25 years old tertiary care referral Eye Hospital with 24x7 Trauma Care and with all subspecialties. GEI serves over a lakh patients annually.

Giridhar Eye Institute (GEI) located in Kadavanthara, Cochin City in South India is an NABH accredited tertiary eye care hospital, established in September 1997. It has 23 full time consultants with all sub-specialties in Ophthalmology. Giridhar Eye Institute is the only hospital in the city of Cochin that provides 24x7 Trauma care. The community eye care projects of this hospital are taken care of by SSM Eye Research Foundation, a charitable trust promoted by Giridhar Eye Institute, for helping the underprivileged. It is one of the largest referral centers for the treatment of diseases pertaining to Retinal diseases, Ocular trauma, Cataract & Glaucoma, Uvea, Orbit and Oculoplasty, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Cornea and Refractive Errors, Contact Lens, Low Vision Aid and complicated surgical interventions. With its five fully equipped operation theaters, it performs more than 6500 surgeries every year. It also performs more than 600 free surgeries and treats over 8000 patients through free camps conducted by the SSM Trust every year. GEI also conducts post-doctoral fellowship programs viz. fellowship in Retina, Cataract & Glaucoma, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Comprehensive Ophthalmology, etc. Institute is accredited to National Board of Examinations, New Delhi for the DNB (equivalent to MS/MD) Course. The entire team at Giridhar remains committed to delivering better eye health to the world.

The Indian Blind Football Federation (IBFF) will host the 2025 IBSA Men’s Blind Football Nations Cup from 25th September – 1st October 2025 at the United Sports Centre, Kakkanad, Kochi, Kerala.

Top teams from across the world – England, India, Poland, Republic of Korea, Italy, and Iran – will battle it out in this prestigious international tournament organized by the International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA).

We are proud to have Giridhar Eye Institute as the Official Partner, supporting the vision of inclusivity and empowerment through sports.

On September 8th, 2025, we marked our 28th Founder’s Day & Felicitation Ceremony with a heartwarming gathering at our OT block campus.

The evening began with a prayer song and lighting of the lamp, followed by an inspiring address on “Celebrating 28 Years of Excellence” by Dr. S J Saikumar.

National Eye Donation Fortnight 2025 – Awareness Rally at Kochi

As part of National Eye Donation Fortnight 2025, Giridhar Eye Institute’s Swarnam Eye Bank, in collaboration with the Susruta School of Optometry, organized an awareness rally on 30th August at Kadavanthra.

The rally, flagged off by Dr. Vinay Pillai, Head of Cornea & Refractive Surgery, highlighted the need and relevance of eye donation in restoring vision and transforming lives.

We were honored by the presence of Dr. A. Giridhar (Medical Director), Dr. Kanchana (Assistant Medical Director), Dr. Mahesh G, Dr. Marian Pauly, Dr. Divya Giridhar, our dedicated doctors, staff, and dignitaries.

The event spread the powerful message that pledging eyes can bring the gift of sight and light up lives even beyond our lifetime.

LUMIVIEW 2025 – Enhancing Vision with Contact Lenses 🌟

On 24th August 2025, at the grand venue of Hotel Abad Plaza, Kochi, Giridhar Eye Institute proudly hosted Lumiview 2025—a one-day conference held in accordance with Contact Lens Health Week.

The event was inaugurated by Dr. Vinay S pillai, Head – Cornea & Refractive Surgeries, marking the beginning of a transformative journey in contact lens education.

🔹 Session One
Led by the renowned Mr. Nilesh Thite (Director, IACLE) and other eminent speakers, the first session explored the overview of contact lenses to X-Chrome lens, with an unforgettable live demonstration. An interactive quiz added excitement and energy, engaging every participant.

🔹 Session Two
Focused on specialty contact lenses, this session brought scleral and orthokeratology into the spotlight, followed by a hands-on workshop that gave participants real-time expertise in advanced lens fitting.

✨ With 140 enthusiastic participants, Lumiview 2025 wasn’t just a conference—it was a celebration of knowledge, innovation, and the future of vision care.

The program was supported by Bausch & Lomb, Silver Line Laboratories, and V-Square, whose contribution made this milestone possible.

August is Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) Awareness Month

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a rare but life-threatening condition—most often triggered by medications, and sometimes infections. It can severely affect the skin, eyes, mouth, and even internal organs, often leaving survivors with lasting complications, particularly vision-related.

🎯 Early recognition saves lives.
Initial symptoms often resemble the flu—fever, sore throat, burning eyes—and are easily overlooked. These can rapidly progress to a painful rash, blistering, or peeling skin. If you or someone you know develops such symptoms after starting a new medication, seek urgent medical care and discontinue the suspected drug immediately.

💡 This month is about awareness and action:

For patients and families: Don’t ignore the early signs. If you’re on a new medication and develop flu-like symptoms, rash, or ulcers in the mouth/eyes—get medical help right away.

For healthcare providers: Be vigilant. Early diagnosis and multidisciplinary care—especially involving dermatology, ophthalmology, and intensive care—can be life-saving.

👁️ Eye health is a major concern:
Up to 80% of SJS survivors face ongoing eye complications, which can worsen over time and lead to blindness. However, early and expert ophthalmic intervention can dramatically improve quality of life.

Let’s use this month to:
✅ Support survivors and their families
✅ Share knowledge across medical and patient communities
✅ Advocate for earlier diagnosis and safer prescribing practices

Together, we can raise awareness and improve outcomes for those affected by SJS.

We are delighted to invite you to a one-day Contact Lens Conference – LUMIVIEW, themed: “Enhancing Vision with Contact Lenses,” organized by Giridhar Eye Institute in association with Contact Lens Health Week2025. The event will be held on Sunday, 24th August 2025, at Hotel Abad Plaza, Cochin. This conference is specially designed for practicing optometrists and optometry interns, with a focus on the latest innovations, clinical approaches, and practical applications in contact lens practice.

The program includes two enriching sessions:
Morning Session: Insightful oral presentations by eminent speakers covering a wide range of topics related to contact lens technology, clinical applications, and patient care.

Afternoon Session: A hands-on workshop and live demonstration session, giving participants the opportunity to gain direct experience in specialty lens fitting, assessment techniques, and troubleshooting, all under expert supervision. This event is an excellent platform to enhance your clinical knowledge, sharpen practical skills, and engage with leaders in the field of contact lenses.
