JIMSH Doctors Successfully Remove Rare Foreign Body from Child’s Airway
A team of doctors at Jagannath Gupta Institute of Medical Sciences and Hospital (JIMSH), Budge Budge, successfully treated a rare and challenging case involving a 12-year-old boy, Master Girdhar Sahu, who had accidentally aspirated a metallic board pin on 30th August 2025 while attempting to prick his teeth.
The child was initially taken to GB Pant Hospital, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, where preliminary management was provided. However, due to the delicate position of the foreign body in the lower airway, removal could not be attempted. The patient was then referred to JIMSH on 10th September 2025 for specialized intervention.
On admission, the boy showed no difficulty in swallowing or breathing, which was unusual since foreign body aspiration often presents with respiratory distress. At JIMSH, a CT scan was conducted to accurately confirm the location of the object.
The case was jointly managed by:
• Dr. Sanjoy Ghosh, Professor of ENT
• Dr. Barnava Pal, Consultant Anaesthetist
• Dr. Sushant Bhanja, Consultant Paediatrician
With coordinated teamwork, the doctors performed a rigid bronchoscopy under general anaesthesia, and the metallic pin was successfully removed with precision and care. The entire procedure was completed without any complications, and the child has now made a full recovery.
This case is a testament to the clinical expertise of JIMSH’s multidisciplinary team and the state-of-the-art facilities available at the hospital, reaffirming its commitment to providing advanced and safe healthcare for complex and high-risk cases.
