শিবু বাবুর বয়স প্রায় পঞ্চান্ন। গত কয়েক বছর ধরে তিনি হাঁটুর তীব্র ব্যথায় ভুগছিলেন। প্রথমে ভেবেছিলেন বয়সের কারণেই হয়তো এমন হচ্ছে, তাই তেমন গুরুত্ব দেননি। কিন্তু সময়ের সঙ্গে সঙ্গে ব্যথা এতটাই বেড়ে যায় যে, প্রতিদিনের সাধারণ কাজগুলোও তাঁর কাছে কঠিন হয়ে ওঠে।সকালে উঠেই হাঁটা শুরু করলে হাঁটুতে কাঁপুনি ধরত, সিঁড়ি ভাঙা যেন একেবারেই অসম্ভব হয়ে দাঁড়িয়েছিল। বাজারে যাওয়া, পাড়ার লোকজনের সঙ্গে আড্ডা দেওয়া—সব কিছুই ধীরে ধীরে কমে আসে। সবচেয়ে কষ্টের ছিল, নিজের এই অসহায় অবস্থাটা মেনে নেওয়া।অবশেষে পরিবারের জোরাজুরিতে তিনি ডা. অমরিশ কুমার ঝা-র কাছে যান। আধুনিক হাসপাতালের পরিষ্কার-পরিচ্ছন্ন চেম্বারে ঢুকে প্রথমেই তাঁর চোখে পড়ে ডাক্তারের শান্ত ও আত্মবিশ্বাসী উপস্থিতি।ডা. ঝা খুব মন দিয়ে তাঁর সমস্যার কথা শোনেন। শিবু বাবু যখন হাঁটুর ব্যথার কথা বলতে বলতে নিজের কষ্টটা বোঝাচ্ছিলেন, তখন ডাক্তারবাবু ধৈর্যের সঙ্গে সব শুনে তাঁকে আশ্বস্ত করেন। এরপর একটি হাঁটুর মডেল দেখিয়ে খুব সহজভাবে বোঝান—সমস্যাটা ঠিক কোথায় এবং কীভাবে এর চিকিৎসা সম্ভব।ডাক্তারের সেই সহজ ব্যাখ্যা আর আন্তরিক ব্যবহার শিবু বাবুর মনে এক নতুন ভরসা জাগায়। এতদিন যে ভয় আর অনিশ্চয়তা তাঁকে ঘিরে রেখেছিল, তা যেন একটু একটু করে দূর হতে থাকে।
