Awareness about Low Vision Management .!!!
The main types of low-vision devices for near tasks are either spectacle-mounted, hand-held, or stand magnifiers.
The type of magnifier prescribed depends on what it is to be used for. Most patients with glaucoma with reduced visual fields cannot use as high a magnification because of the small field of view at close working distances.
For prolonged use such as reading a newspaper, low-power hand and stand magnifiers should provide longer reading distance for patients .
Hand-held magnifiers could also be used for spot reading of instructions on food labels, prices, or timetables.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) is useful for small central visual fields because it provides flexibility of reading distance, facilitates easier scanning eye movements and options for reverse polarity, i.e. white letters on a black background.
Distance devices such as telescopes are commonly used by children and young adults, but are not commonly used by older adults.
Illumination is another important factor to consider in glaucoma patients because of their reduced contrast sensitivity. Table lamps with hinged extension arms will help to adjust the position of the light source with adequate illumination on the material. Other contrast enhancement measures such as typoscopes, large-print material in good contrast (e.g. black text on white background) and felt-tipped pens should be considered.
Orientation and mobility training is an important consideration for patients with significant visual acuity and field loss. The training program will help the individuals to be independent and confident in moving around in unfamiliar places either with the use of a cane or other methods.
In addition to prescribing the optical or non-optical devices, training in use of the devices is also essential. Some patients may also require training in daily living activities.
