PRESS STATEMENT FOR CIRCULATION/ BROADCASTING
Dr. Bhabani Sankar Das, General Secretary, MEDICAL SERVICE CENTRE, in a statement voiced the dismay of the medical fraternity and citizens at large at the unfortunate undemocratic actions of the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front that forced Dr. Aniket Mahata, leader of the R G Kar Movement to leave the Front, but urged to continue the fight for truth:
“It is most unfortunate that Dr. Aniket Mahata who led the R G Kar Movement from the front from its very initiation, was almost forced to leave the West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front because of their undemocratic actions.
In the case of Abhaya’s murder and r**e, the Kolkata Police and the West Bengal State Government tried to pass it off as a su***de. But it was Dr. Aniket and his colleagues who started an uncompromising movement and stopped this plan in the very first hours. During the protest, Dr. Aniket looked at the Chief Minister eye to eye and openly spoke the truth directly on her face. Due to this, the Government singled him out and became hostile towards him.
After completing his MD, the State Government did not follow the orders of the High Court and the Supreme Court regarding his posting as a Senior Resident. This openly displayed its very undemocratic and vindictive attitude. In such a situation, even if Dr. Aniket had joined as a Senior Resident, there was a constant fear that the State Government would victimise him at every step. So, leaving the Senior Resident post at this time became unavoidable for him.
In such circumstances, the Service Centre and all those who support the struggle for justice will stand firmly beside Dr. Aniket. We will also work together to make sure that the movement gathers strength and moves forward with full momentum in the coming days.”
