Dear diabetic patients,

This is a polite request.

Don't just depend just on medicines for your glucose control. I as a doctor don't have indefinite supply of medicines to prescribe. The brands are in thousands but the pharmaceutical molecules which are the base of these brands are just 6-7. And some may cause side effects. I may soon run out of medicines to prescribe.

So, kindly change your lifestyle. Reduce carbs and reduce weight. Go for Therapeutic Carb Restriction. Choose this as an option rather than medicines.

Thank you

Is there any relationship between smoking and diabetes?

Yes.

Smokers have a 30-40% increased risk of type 2 diabetes (T2D), as compared to people who do not smoke. The risk is dose-dependent: More the number of ci******es smoked, greater is the risk of T2D.
In addition, people with diabetes who smoke, have greater difficulty in managing their diabetes/insulin dose/blood sugar levels.

Daily toothbrushing in patients admitted to ICU reduces the risk of pneumonia

Pneumonia, unfortunately, is a common complication in ICU patients, especially those on mechanical ventilator.

A recent study examined whether daily toothbrushing could reduce the risk of hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP).

Results of the study
Daily toothbrushing was associated with significantly
1. Lower rates of HAP, particularly in patients receiving mechanical ventilation,
2. Lower rates of ICU mortality (death),
3. Shorter duration of mechanical ventilation, and
4. Shorter ICU length of stay.

Possible mechanisms
Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) is usually due to aspiration of microflora from the oral microbiome, a complex and highly diverse ecosystem with an estimated 700 species of bacteria, fungi, viruses, and protozoa. Extensive data has established a link between the oral microbiome, oral health, dental plaques, and periodontal disease and the development of pneumonia.

Take home message
Rigorous oral care, including daily toothbrushing, is recommended to prevent HAP.
