Robotic Surgery: Technology Guided by the Surgeon 🤖⚕️
Robotic surgery is often misunderstood. Many people believe that robots perform the surgery independently—but that’s not true.
In this video, Dr. Sumanta Dey, GI Consultant – General & Minimal Access Surgeon, explains how robotic and advanced laparoscopic surgery actually work. The robotic system simply enhances the surgeon’s precision, vision, and control while the surgeon remains fully in command throughout the procedure.
Understanding the technology helps patients make informed decisions about modern surgical care.

🛑Do you frequently experience acidity, heartburn, difficulty swallowing, or unexplained weight loss?
These may not always be simple ‘gas problems’. They could be warning signs of upper gastrointestinal diseases!!!
The upper gastrointestinal tract includes the food pipe (esophagus), stomach, and first part of the intestine.
Common diseases include:
• Acid reflux (GERD)
• Gastritis
• Peptic ulcer disease
• Hiatal hernia
• Stomach and esophageal cancers
In India 🇮🇳 , gastrointestinal problems are very common.
• Around 18% of Indian adults report gastrointestinal symptoms.
• Studies show GERD symptoms affect roughly 7–19% of the population.
• Helicobacter pylori infection, a major cause of ulcers, is found in over 60–70% of many ulcer patients in India.
Lifestyle factors contributing to this rise include:
🍔 Irregular diet
☕ Excess tea/coffee
💊 Painkiller overuse
🚬 Smoking
😰 Stress
✅Modern technology has transformed surgical treatment. Robotic surgery offers:
✔ Greater surgical precision
✔ Smaller incisions
✔ Less pain
✔ Faster recovery
✔ Better visualization for complex upper GI procedures
❇️It is now used for procedures such as:
• Anti-reflux surgery
• Hiatal hernia repair
• Gastric surgery
• Esophageal surgery
• Upper GI cancer surgery
💡 Key Message:
Most upper GI problems are treatable if detected early.
☠️Do not ignore persistent symptoms.
Consult a specialist and take advantage of modern diagnostic and surgical advances like robotic surgery.
🍀Your digestive health matters.
Early diagnosis, expert care, and advanced technology can make a life-changing difference.

Colorectal cancer is one of the fastest rising cancers in India, especially in urban populations. Alarmingly, many patients are diagnosed late, often after symptoms like bleeding per re**um, change in bowel habits, unexplained weight loss, or persistent abdominal discomfort appear.
Early detection can save lives. Screening tests such as stool occult blood test and colonoscopy can detect cancer at an early stage — and even prevent it by identifying precancerous polyps.
Healthy lifestyle choices also matter: 🥗 High-fiber diet
🚶 Regular physical activity
⚖️ Maintaining healthy weight
🚭 Avoiding to***co & excess alcohol
Do not ignore symptoms. Early consultation with a doctor can make colorectal cancer one of the most preventable and treatable cancers.
🎗️ March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month — spread awareness, encourage screening, save lives.

Dr. Sumanta Dey highlights why persistent constipation, changes in bowel habits, blood in stool, or mucus discharge should never be ignored. These symptoms ma...

In medicine, knowledge is powerful…
but humility is what keeps that knowledge safe.
A Doctor who remains humble understands that medicine is vast, evolving, and sometimes unpredictable. No matter how many surgeries we perform or how many patients we treat, there is always something new to learn and someone new who can teach us. 📚
Humility allows a doctor to:
🔹 Listen carefully to patients 👂
🔹 Respect colleagues and juniors 🤝
🔹 Accept complications honestly ⚖️
🔹 Continue learning every single day 📖
A humble doctor knows that every patient carries a story, a fear, and a hope. ❤️
Healing is not just about instruments and prescriptions — it is about trust, empathy, and responsibility.
For patients too, humility plays an important role.
Trusting the medical process, communicating openly, and respecting the journey of treatment creates a stronger doctor–patient relationship. 🤝
In the end, medicine is not a battle of egos — it is a partnership to restore life and health.
The greatest doctors are not remembered only for their skill, but for their humanity, humility, and compassion. 🌿
Because in healthcare, humility doesn’t reduce greatness… it defines it.
✨ Stay curious. Stay compassionate. Stay humble.

🌍 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐥𝐝 𝐎𝐛𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐃𝐚𝐲 | 4𝐭𝐡 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐜𝐡 2026

In a world of 8 billion people, there are 8 billion reasons to address obesity as a global priority.

Obesity is not just about appearance or body weight. It is a chronic medical condition that increases the risk of:

🔴 Type 2 Diabetes
🔴 High Blood Pressure
🔴 Heart Disease
🔴 Fatty Liver
🔴 Sleep Apnea
🔴 Joint Problems
🔴 Certain Cancers

Today, more than 1 billion people worldwide are living with obesity. The numbers are rising — not only in adults but also in children.

Let’s be very clear:
Obesity is NOT a lack of willpower.
It is influenced by genetics, hormones, lifestyle, stress, sleep, and environment.

The good news?
✅ Treatment works.

Lifestyle modification, medical therapy, and when appropriate, Bariatric surgery can significantly improve health, reverse diabetes, reduce heart risks, and enhance quality of life.

This ,
let us replace stigma with science.
Let us replace shame with support.
Let us replace delay with action.

If you or your loved one is struggling with obesity, seek medical guidance. Early intervention can change lives.

💙 End the Stigma.
💚 Take Action for Health.

𝐑𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐞𝐫!!
𝐆𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐔𝐩 𝐖𝐚𝐬 𝐍𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧 𝐎𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧!!!

At 88 years of age, multiple other chronic health problems, the patient experienced extreme distress — severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, and breathlessness. What seemed sudden was actually a rare, dangerous condition unfolding quietly inside.

A Giant Type IV Hiatus Hernia had pushed the stomach and Colon into the chest, compressing the lungs and heart.
Despite advanced age and high risk, a carefully planned laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery was performed. The organs were gently restored, the diaphragm repaired — and relief followed. Pain eased. Breathing improved. Life steadied again.

💙 Message for families:
Sudden abdominal pain, vomiting, and breathlessness — especially in the elderly — are never “just age”.
Early recognition and expert care can be life-saving, even in the late 80s.

He came today for post operative review. Standing with the “young” man with full of energy, hope & inspiration!

🔹 What is a GIST Tumour?
• GIST stands for Gastro-Intestinal Stromal Tumour
• It is a rare tumour arising from the wall of the digestive tract
• Most commonly seen in:
• Stomach
• Small intestine
• Rarely in esophagus, colon, or re**um

🔹 Is GIST Cancer? ♋️
• GISTs can be benign or malignant
• Many GISTs grow slowly and are treatable
• Early diagnosis leads to excellent outcomes

🔹 Common Symptoms
(Some patients may have no symptoms initially)
• Abdominal pain or discomfort
• Feeling of fullness or bloating
• Gastrointestinal bleeding (black stools or vomiting blood)
• Unexplained anemia
• Weight loss
• A lump felt in the abdomen

🔹 How is GIST Diagnosed?
• CT scan / MRI
• Endoscopy or Ultrasound
• Biopsy with special tests (Immunohistochemistry – KIT/CD117, DOG1)

🔹 How is GIST Treated?
✅ Surgery
• Main and most effective treatment

• Special medicines (e.g. Imatinib)
• Used before or after surgery in selected cases
• Much safer than traditional chemotherapy

🔹 Is Chemotherapy or Radiation Needed?
• Routine chemotherapy is usually NOT effective
• Radiation is rarely required
• GIST responds well to targeted therapy

🔹 Prognosis & Outcome
• Depends on:
• Tumour size
• Location
• Mitotic rate (growth activity)
• Many patients live a normal, healthy life after treatment
• Regular follow-up is important

🔹 When to Consult a Doctor?
• Persistent abdominal pain
• Recurrent anemia
• GI bleeding
• Any unexplained abdominal symptoms

👉 Early evaluation saves lives

🔹 Key Take-Home Message
• GIST is rare but treatable
• Early diagnosis + expert surgical care = excellent results

Many patients ask:
“𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫, 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐦𝐲 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐫𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐲?”

The honest answer is:
👉 Recurrence is possible, but uncommon with modern techniques.

Today, most hernia surgeries are performed using advanced mesh repair and minimally invasive (laparoscopic/robotic) techniques, making the repair strong and durable.
More than 99% of patients live hernia-free after surgery.

Why does a hernia sometimes recur?

A hernia can come back if there is excessive strain on the repaired area, such as:
• Heavy weight lifting too soon
• Chronic cough or smoking
• Constipation and straining
• Obesity
• Poor diabetes control
• Infection at the surgical site
• Very large or complex hernias

That is why post-surgery care is as important as the surgery itself.

How you can protect your hernia repair?

As your surgeon, I always advise:

✔ Follow activity restrictions
✔ Avoid heavy lifting initially
✔ Treat cough & constipation early
✔ Maintain healthy weight
✔ Stop smoking
✔ Control blood sugar
✔ Attend follow-up visits

These simple steps make your repair strong for life.

If you notice:
• A new bulge
• Pain or heaviness near the old surgery site
• Discomfort on coughing or standing

👉 Don’t panic.
👉 Just get checked early.
Early evaluation means simple solutions.
