Jammu and Kashmir’s armless archer and Paralympics medallist Sheetal Devi edged out Odisha’s quadruple amputee Payal Nag to win the gold medal in a much-anticipated clash at the Khelo India Para Games on Sunday.
In an intense battle between two talented teenagers, defending champion Sheetal came from behind to secure her second gold medal of the Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The 18-year-old Sheetal triumphed 109–103 over 17-year-old Payal in the final.
Payal, who lost all four limbs due to electrocution in childhood, competes using prosthetic legs. Despite the sunny and windy conditions in the national capital, both archers displayed remarkable determination.
Payal held the advantage early on, but in the third round, she faltered with a score of 7, allowing Sheetal to regain momentum with her consistent 10s. The deciding fifth round sealed the match, giving Sheetal the gold and India another proud moment at the Para Games.
“I shoot arrows using two devices fitted to my prosthetic legs. I faced some difficulty adjusting today, and the wind made it challenging. But I am happy to reach the final and win the silver medal,” Payal said after the match.
According to her coach, Kuldeep Vedwan, Payal recently received a new device, and the team is working to help her adapt fully ahead of future competitions.
