“When Parkinson’s disease enters a family’s life, it affects more than just the person receiving the diagnosis; it reshapes the lives of everyone who loves them. I know this journey intimately. As Muhammad’s partner and care partner, I learned that Parkinson’s doesn’t just test the body; it tests patience, courage and the very fabric of relationships. Yet within those challenges, I also found strength, purpose and an unbreakable bond.”

“As I reflect on my family’s journey, I am reminder that care partnership is not a burden – it is love in action. There will be hard days, but also moments of deep connection and joy. By caring for our loved ones and ourselves, we honor life as it is, not just the illness we face.”

- Lonnie Ali, Parkinson’s advocate, care partner, and wife of the late Muhammad Ali.

🗣️ We want you to share your stories!

For a new book collaboration with Barbara Salsberg Matthews, we're asking people with Parkinson's: "How do you harvest joy to feel at your best?" Barbara will turn a selection of answers into illustrations for her book.

We'd love to hear from you, and specifically invite submissions from under-represented groups. Either DM or email us at info@parkinsonseurope.org with your answer, name, where you live and the year and age you were diagnosed. Please don't share personal information publicly.

Here's one illustration from the book, based on a submission from Esther Labib-Kiyarash :

"Pockets of Joy for me are things that I create to get me through the day. Sometimes with Parkinson’s it’s the minutes, the moments. So a big part of that is just being really grateful for every little thing that we have. I’m 51 today and my son is 12. He made this joke. There’s truth in it. He said,

‘Mom, you can’t keep saying you’re middle-age. You’re 51 now and that means you’re more than in the middle. You’re passed the middle, you’re near the end, unless you live to be 102.’

That’s the good thing about having younger kids, they’re so good in living in the moment. That’s what I’m trying to do."
