A healthy endometrial lining is crucial for a successful pregnancy, as it provides the necessary environment for a embryo to implant and grow. A thin endometrium can lead to infertility, difficulty conceiving, or recurrent miscarriages and repeated IVF failures.
What is a "Thin Endometrium "
The thickness of Endometrium is less than 7mm is considered as thin. For successful embryo implantation, a thickness of 8mm or more is generally considered ideal.
Causes of Thin Endometrium
A thin endometrium can be caused by various factors, including:
Low Estrogen Levels: Estrogen is the primary hormone responsible for thickening the endometrial lining. Low levels can be due to poor ovarian reserve, hormonal imbalances, or conditions like PCOS or thyroid disorders.
Poor Uterine Blood Flow: Insufficient blood supply to the uterus can hinder the growth of the endometrial lining.
Damage to the Endometrial Lining: Past uterine surgeries (like a D&C), infections (like chronic endometritis), or conditions like Asherman's syndrome (intrauterine adhesions or scar tissue) can damage the endometrium, preventing it from proliferation
Age: As women age, approach to menopause, the endometrial lining may naturally thin due to declining estrogen levels.
Symptoms
A thin endometrium may not always have clear symptoms. However, some signs that may indicate a problem include:
Irregular or light periods: The menstrual flow may be unusually light or you may have irregular or missed periods.
Difficulty conceiving: Infertility is a common symptom, as the thin lining may not provide a suitable environment for an embryo to implant.
Recurrent miscarriages: Even if an embryo manages to implant, a thin lining can increase the risk miscarriage
