Importance of Yoga Education today :
As individuals we differ in our likings and disliking, desires and wishes, aspirations and ambitions no one of us is alike. However, in spite of the differences, we all share a common desire and it is that every-one of us wants to be happy in life. It is also quite natural that our means of happiness also differ. Every one of us wants peace of mind. In spite of our all possessions the modern civilization has given us; we lack peace of mind. Hence, many times we feel our life to be unfulfilled or futile without mental peace.
Happiness is in fact, a quest and mission of life of every individual. We must understand that modern amenities have brought comforts to the life and not peace or happiness. Its fast pace has also brought strain and stress into the life. Man is not able to adjust with such burden of stresses. His adaptability is falling short to the changing situations of life. When reaction to the stress is out of proportion to the demands made by the situations or circumstances, they lead to “adaptation diseases” as Hans Selye calls them. In fact, our reaction to the circumstances is stress.
What is required by individual is to develop abilities to cope up or to develop resistance at psycho-physiological level to meet the circumstances successfully to find the reaction on the body mind not out of proportion.
For modern man, his modern life style has presented him modern diseases / disorders. But it has a definite answer provided he wants to seek it sincerely. The term “Sincerity” has serious meaning here because no attempt can be pursued without sincerity.
Let us try to understand that modern diseases are result of modern life style and these can be overcome only by changing life style in positive manner. Yoga is way of life and not simply view of life. It has practical value. A practitioner of Yoga is required to follow certain disciples which are code of conduct and they are self-imposed. Without discipline, no progress, whether material or spiritual, of man is possible.
That is why there is difference between human and animal. Animal behaves with instincts whereas, human being behaves with rationale. The following quotation suggests;

ahara nidra bhaya maithuna ch samanyametatpasunirbharanam|
dharmi hi tesamardhiko viseso ghameina hina pasubhi samana||

Here, the meaning of word Dharma is a rationale conduct: a behavior not guided by the instincts but by the reason. This power of reasoning is made use of in yoga. But disciplined behavior expected of practitioner. By practicing yoga sincerely, one develops “vivek-khyati”; conscience.
Yoga considers man as a whole for his all problems. The important aspects like physical, mental, emotional and spiritual are part of the wholeness. Yoga education has graded ways to tackle these aspects. Many times it puts a little more emphasis on some but they are homogenously linked together and when one aspect is tackled other aspects too are indirectly and conveniently tackled. Thus Yoga believes in the education of whole man and his personality which has several facets.
Yoga education provides efficacious means which can deal with all the individuals considering their differences in abilities and capacities. Thus Yoga Education caters to the needs of physical, emotional or spiritual according to the limitations and interests of the persons. The important part of Yoga Education is to equip the man with means to reeducate him in bringing about positive transformation so that he can manage the life without much hustle / conflict. Usually, man wants that others should change except him. Yoga says change yourself. Change must begin from the self. Know that, education starts from oneself. Its emphasis is on practice rather than precept.
To deal with the problems of human life, yoga education has an approach to the body, it has approach to the mind and it has also an approach to the spirit. These three approaches are not isolated from each other but are inter-linked. Yoga education has an integrated approach.

YOGA

Yoga is most valuable heritage of India. The entire world is immensely attracted towards it and also looking towards it for the answer to various problems. Unfortunately, the fact is that Yoga is misunderstood even in India. We shall find that there are number of misconceptions about yoga. Let us see some of them as follows.

A few misconceptions about Yoga :-
1) A wrong but popular understanding among people about Yoga is that householders should not practice Yoga or it is not meant for them. Only those who are interested in sacrificing the objective world can practice Yoga. But this is wrong notion. The truth is that Yoga is for the well being of the humanity. However, this mis-belief is disappearing quickly now because of global efforts towards acceptance of Yoga.
2) Even today many questions are asked by people that Yoga is concerned with super natural experiences of Life? Whether can we perform feasts with power of Yoga? Such misunderstandings are developed because the people come across with wrong kind of literature about yoga or lack of understanding on their part to understand yoga. Yoga has nothing to do with miracles but yoga is very much scientific in nature.
3) Yoga is confused many a time, with mystic visions, black magic etc. But this is not correct.
4) Yoga is also looked upon as a system of medicine. It is believed (wrongly) it has potential to cure all kinds of diseases. But it is not true. However, Yoga does have therapeutic value but with its limitations as other pathies too do have their own limitations.

What is Yoga?
The word Yoga is considered as an ‘end’ as well as a ‘means’. As ‘end’ yoga signifies ‘Integration’ of personality at all possible levels. Yoga is derivative of “yuj” which signifies “Samadhi”. It is a comprehensive term which really denotes Integration which includes in it all other meanings. Bhagwatgita defines Yoag as “Samatva” which means homeostasis, evenness, equilibrium, balance, harmonious development, etc. It suggests the same as an end or aim to be attained.
In Yoga literature, there are number of techniques prescribed to help development of such Integration. Thus we get various individual practices like Netiyoga, Laulikiyoga, Dhyanayoga etc. When these techniques or practices are systematized and formed into discipline, they become school of Yoga, for example, Bhaktiyoga, Jnanayoga, Karmayoga, Hathayoga, Layayoga etc.
Thus Yoga conveys the meaning of “means and end” traditionally. This may be one of the main causes of confusion about yoga. But if one is able to discriminate between the usages of the term yoga as an end and as a means, then there is no cause for confusion about yoga.

What is significance of 21st June as International Day of Yoga.
Many of you must be having in your mind a question as to why 21st June only, was decided as “International Day of Yoga”. We will have to know the thought behind it.
Before we try to know about it, let us first know what happened before the idea of “International Day of Yoga” came into existence. It is our Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Mr. Narendra Modi, while in his speech before UNGA (United Nations General Assembly” on 27th Sept.2014 introduced the idea of “International Day of Yoga” first time and proposed the same in the assembly.
Mr. Ashoke Mukherji, India’s permanent in UNGA prepared the draft of “International Day of Yoga” on 11th December 2014. Surprisingly it was adopted by 177 member states without vote. The text of the draft was unanimously approved and the idea of “International Day of Yoga” came to reality. The draft resolution was conveyed by Delegation of India to member states of UNGA.
Now why 21 st June only as “International Day of Yoga”? We all know that 21 June is longest day of the year. It is longest day in northern hemisphere (shortest in the southern hemisphere) having its special significance in many parts of the world. The summer solstice marks the transition to Dakshinayana from Yoga perspective. The first full moon day after this transition is known as Guru Poornima. On this day Shiva, the Adi Yogi and Adi Guru is believed to have begun teaching of Yoga to the humanity. Dakshinayayna is also considered the auspicious time for the spiritual practices. That is why 21st June was accepted as “Internal Day of Yoga”.
