Yoga is not only a physical training but also mental discipline. Instead of going into the real nature of Yoga, peoples are making wrong interpretations. Modern peoples understand Yoga just as an exercise but it is much more than this.
This is the reason why the famous work on yogic practices, Hatha Pradipika(13-14th AD) clearly mentions the aim of yogic practices to make a background for higher mental practices and achievements . In advance practices, we go for more mental discipline rather than physical.
Likewise, Patanjala Yoga states the definition of Yoga as the complete cessation of the fluctuations of the mind stuff( Chitta). Patanjali only concerns to the higher aims of Yoga for which Hatha Yoga builds a perfect base. His inquiry starts from the mental training not physical.
Actually Yogic practices make our our body fit and still after we can carry our efforts to make our mind still. Even stillness of mind is not a real Yoga but a state and mental and physical practices are also not Yoga but only practice.
Where there is nothing to do, only infinite silence remains is the state of Yoga....even there is no words to say about Yoga
