UK, where the vaccination against Covid-19 has already begun, is set to enter into the highest level of coronavirus restrictions starting Wednesday. The decision to enforce tier-3 restrictions across Britain was announced by Health Secretary Matt Hancock in the House of Commons.

Hancock cited a "very sharp" spike in Covid-19 cases in Greater London, Kent and Essex caused by a new variant of the novel coronavirus. This new variant is responsible for "faster spread which is leading to cases doubling in some areas every seven days," Health Secretary Matt Hancock said adding that "swift and decisive action" is the need of the hour.

"We have currently identified over 1,000 cases with this variant predominantly in the south of England, although cases have been identified in nearly 60 different local authority areas," Hancock told British MPs.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) acknowledged this new strain of the virus with the body's top emergencies expert Mike Ryan telling a news briefing in Geneva, "We are aware of this genetic variant reported in 1,000 individuals in England."

"Authorities are looking at its significance. We have seen many variants, this virus evolves and changes over time," news agency Reuters quoted Mike Ryan as saying.

However, neither British authorities nor the WHO have asserted that this new strain of the coronavirus could fail to respond to a vaccine.

As per England's three-tier emergency system, people will not be allowed to socialise indoors starting Wednesday. In addition, bars, pubs, restaurants and eateries will remain closed with the exception of takeout.

According to latest data, the UK has reported 18,54,500 confirmed cases of Covid-19 while the virus has claimed 64,268 lives in the island nation to date.

WASHINGTON: Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, whose foundation has been part of the effort to develop and deliver Covid-19 vaccines, has warned that the next four to six months could be the worst of the coronavirus pandemic.

In recent weeks, the US has been experiencing record high cases, deaths and hospitalisations.
"I thought the US would do a better job handling it," Gates, who in 2015 had warned the world of such a pandemic, said on Sunday.

Coronavirus outbreak: Live updates
"Sadly, the next four to six months could be the worst of the pandemic. The IHME (Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation) forecast shows over 200,000 additional deaths. If we would follow the rules, in terms of wearing masks and not mixing, we could avoid a large percentage of those deaths,” Gates, the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, told CNN.

The Covid-19 has so far killed more than 290,000 people in the US.

HONG KONG: Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday (Dec 8) the city will ban dining in restaurants from 6pm to curb a rise in COVID-19 cases in the densely packed financial hub.

Lam, speaking at her weekly press briefing, said the government will also study additional relief measures for those affected by the latest restrictions.
"The situation is very worrying. This wave is more complicated and more severe than the last wave. The confirmed cases are widely spread out," Lam told reporters.

"If we don't control it strictly, there'll be bigger risks. This time we'll roll out suppressing measures aimed at limiting foot traffic flow on the streets.

The government has already urged residents to stay at home and limit gatherings to no more than two people, while most civil servants work from home.
