Today (2nd April) is Autism awareness day. Can we manage ASD behaviour without shouting / yelling? In other words, does yelling help?
The answer is it does not help.
Yelling may be effective at that moment but it doesn’t change behavior in long run. If you yell, the child is likely to learn- yelling is okay.
Following strategies may help to manage difficult behaviour
1. Why is he yelling- Learn more about your child’s behaviour that who it may be happening and ask the therapist about strategies to manage that.
2. Stay calm- Put brakes on your emotions. If we are stressed or upset- we are likely to pass it on to our child and it may scare him more.
3. Be a role model- Children with Autism are always watching their parents / grandparents. It may seem they aren’t paying attention but they note things more than we think. Demonstrate the child what we want by modelling the desirable behavior.
4. Positive reinforcement- Give your kids attention, talk in a friendly way. Show your happiness when he doing something positive. Yelling at negative behaviour gives more attention to that negative behavior. So, add praise to his positive behavior.
