In a first, man gets genetically-modified pig heart

For the first time, doctors in the US have transplanted a genetically modified pig’s heart into a human patient in a last-ditch effort to save his life.

The experimental surgery was conducted at the University of Maryland medical centre and the patient was doing well three days after the procedure.

The surgery was given special clearance by US regulators on the basis that the patient, David Bennett, 57, would otherwise have died. The patient had been deemed ineligible for a human transplant.

The pig's heart was genetically modified to erase several genes that would have led to the organ being rejected by the patient's body.

The use of animal organs for so-called xenotransplantation has long been researched, but transplanting a full, functioning heart has not been done before. Pig heart valves, however, have been used in transplants.
