To promote the domestic edible oil industry, the Sri Lankan government has banned imports of palm oil, new palm plantations, and has asked the current producers to uproot existing plantations in a phased manner.

As per environmentalists, palm oil has led to widespread deforestation and damage to ecosystems. President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that his aim was to "make the country free from oil palm plantation and palm oil consumption".

The Sri Lankan palm oil industry has invested in 26 billion Sri Lankan rupees, and the country has around 11,000 hectares of palm plantations, according to the Palm Oil industry association.
