Congenital hand differences can affect both the shape and function of a child's hand and arm.
Congenital hand differences are divided into 4 categories:
1. Malformations, in which a certain part of the hand or arm fails to develop normally while the baby is in the womb
2. Deformations, in which the hand and arm begin to develop normally but are prevented from doing so in some way
3. Dysplasias, including overgrowth of part or all of the hand/extremity, as well as conditions that cause tumors
4. Syndromes, in which the hand difference is part of a larger spectrum of disease
