Pavement, asphalt, and even artificial grass can reach temperatures much higher than the air. If you can’t comfortably hold the back of your hand to the ground for seven seconds, it’s hot enough to cause painful burns and blisters on your dog’s sensitive paw pads.
Tips for Summer Walks:
Time it right: Walk your dog in the early morning or late evening when the ground has cooled down.
Stick to the grass: If you must go out during the day, try to keep their paws on shaded or grassy areas.
Invest in booties: If your schedule doesn’t allow for cooler walk times, dog boots can provide a necessary barrier against the heat.
Watch for signs: If your dog is limping, licking their paws excessively, or has darkened/discolored pads, they may have suffered a heat burn.
Your pet’s safety is our priority! If you suspect your pet has burned their paws or is showing signs of heat exhaustion, give us a call or visit us immediately.
