Osteopenia and It's Symptoms

Osteopenia is when your bones are weaker than normal but not so far gone that they break easily, which is the hallmark of osteoporosis.

Symptoms:

If you have osteopenia, you have lower bone density than normal. Your bone density peaks when you’re about 35 years old.

Bone mineral density (BMD) is the measurement of how much bone mineral is in your bones. Your BMD estimates the chances of breaking a bone from normal activity. People who have osteopenia have a lower BMD than normal, but it’s not a disease.

However, having osteopenia does increase your chances of developing osteoporosis. This bone disease causes fractures, stooped posture, and can lead to severe pain and loss of height.

Calcium and Bone Disorders

The bones in the body not only add support but they help the body move. During the early stages of life, the body builds bone faster than it removes it. As we age, production slows down. With bone disorders and natural aging, the structural integrity of the skeleton can weaken. Calcium and bone disorders contribute heavily to weakening of the bones, loss of bone mass or even destruction of bone tissue.

Symptoms:

-A waddling walk
-Bone pain
-Bone deformity
-Bone fractures
-Scoliosis
-Joint pain
-Limited range of motion (often due to pain)

Causes: (Traumatic causes)

-Blunt force trauma
-Fracture
-Damage to blood vessels

Non-traumatic causes:

-Long-term medication use (such as corticosteroids)
-Excessive and/or long-term use of alcohol
-Genetic bone defects
-Chemical irregularities in bone protein
-Infections (sometimes resulting from traumatic injury)
-Benign (non-cancerous) tumors on the parathyroid glands or gland enlargement

Joint Fusion Surgery

If you have severe arthritis pain, your doctor may suggest that you have joint fusion surgery (also called “arthrodesis”). This procedure fuses, or “welds,” together the two bones that make up your aching joint.

It causes the bones to become one solid bone, and it can lessen your pain. It can also make your joint more stable and help you bear more weight on it.

Do I Need It?
Over time, arthritis can cause severe damage to your joints. If other treatments haven’t helped, joint fusion surgery may be the next step. This procedure can also relieve symptoms of back problems like degenerative disk disease and scoliosis.

Joint fusion surgery can be done on many different joints, such as your:

Spine
Ankles
Wrists
Fingers
Thumbs
Feet

For more information about Joint Fusion Surgery, please visit Cheema Medical Complex, Mohali and Meet Dr. Ravinder Puri (Senior Consultant Orthopedics). For Enquiry you can either Contact Us on 9876405771, 0172-4008070.

Knee Arthroscopy: Procedure & Reasons

Knee arthroscopy is a surgical technique that can diagnose and treat problems in the knee joint. During the procedure, your surgeon will make a very small incision and insert a tiny camera called an arthroscope into your knee. This allows them to view the inside of the joint on a screen. The surgeon can then investigate a problem with the knee and, if necessary, correct the issue using small instruments within the arthroscope.

Your doctor may recommend that you undergo a knee arthroscopy if you’re experiencing knee pain. Your doctor might have already diagnosed the condition causing your pain, or they may order the arthroscopy to help find a diagnosis.

Arthroscopic surgery can diagnose and treat knee injuries, including:

Torn anterior or posterior cruciate ligaments
Torn meniscus (the cartilage between the bones in the knee)
Patella that’s out of position
Pieces of torn cartilage that are loose in the joint
Removal of a Baker’s cyst
Fractures in the knee bones
Swollen synovium (the lining in the joint)

If you want Arthroscopy for Shoulder & Knee, please visit CMC, Mohali, and Meet Dr. Ravinder Puri (Senior Consultant Orthopedics). For enquiry call us on 0172-4008070, 9876405771.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome and It's Symptoms

Patellofemoral pain syndrome is a broad term used to describe pain in the front of the knee and around the patella, or kneecap. It is sometimes called "runner's knee" or "jumper's knee" because it is common in people who participate in sports—particularly females and young adults—but patellofemoral pain syndrome can occur in nonathletes, as well. The pain and stiffness it causes can make it difficult to climb stairs, kneel down, and perform other everyday activities.

Symptoms
Patellofemoral pain syndrome usually causes a dull, aching pain in the front of your knee. This pain can be aggravated when you:

-Walk up or down stairs
-Kneel or squat
-Sit with a bent knee for long periods of time

If the knee pain doesn't improve within a few days, consult your doctor.

Brittle Bone Disease and It's Symptoms

Brittle bone disease is a lifelong genetic disorder that causes your bones to break very easily, usually without any type of injury, as from a fall. Your doctor may also call it osteogenesis imperfecta. It affects both sexes and all races equally. There is no cure for brittle bone disease, but your doctor can treat it.

Symptoms:

-Broken bones (fractures)
-Bleeding and easy bruising (frequent nosebleeds or heavy bleeding after an injury)
-Blue color in the white part of the eyes
-Bowing of the legs
-Breathing problems
-Brittle, discolored teeth
-Curved spine, called scoliosis
-Weak muscles and tissues

For more information about brittle bone disease, please visit CMC, Mohali (cmcmohali.com) and meet doctor Dr. Ravinder Puri (Senior Consultant Orthopedics).

Paget's Disease of Bone

Paget's disease of bone is a chronic disease of the skeleton. In healthy bone, a process called remodeling removes old pieces of bone and replaces them with new, fresh bone. Paget’s disease causes this process to shift out of balance, resulting in a new bone that is abnormally shaped, weak, and brittle. Paget’s disease most often affects older people, occurring in approximately 2 to 3 percent of the population over the age of 55.

If you are suffering from Paget's Disease of Bone, Please visit Cheema Medical Complex Mohali.

Osteoporosis and It's Symptoms

Osteoporosis causes bones to become weak and brittle — so brittle that a fall or even mild stresses such as bending over or coughing can cause a fracture. Osteoporosis-related fractures most commonly occur in the hip, wrist or spine.
Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoporosis occurs when the creation of new bone doesn't keep up with the loss of old bone.

Symptoms

-Back pain, caused by a fractured or collapsed vertebra
-Loss of height over time
-A stooped posture
-A bone that breaks much more easily than expected

If you are suffering from Osteoporosis, Please visit Cheema Medical Complex (cmcmohali.com), Mohali now. Call us on 0172-4008070, 9876405771.

7 Different Types of Fractures

1. Stable Fracture: This is the type of fracture that occurs when an injury causes the bone to break clean, with its parts in alignment. This means that the bone maintains its original position.

2. Transverse Fracture: A transverse fracture is one that occurs at a 90-degree angle, straight across the bone. It happens when the impact comes perpendicular to the site of injury.

3. Comminuted Fracture: A comminuted fracture leaves the bone in fragments. It is most common after severe trauma, such as a car accident, and is more likely to occur in the hands or feet.

4. Oblique Fracture: An oblique fracture occurs when the bone breaks at an angle. It tends to occur most often on long bones, such as the femur or tibia. This type of injury causes a visible deformity beneath the skin.

5. Compound Fracture: This is one of the most severe injuries: A compound or open fracture is when the bone pierces the skin when it breaks. Surgery is usually called for due to its severity and the risk of infection.

6. Hairline Fracture: A hairline fracture is also known as a stress fracture and occurs mostly on the legs and feet.

7. Avulsion Fracture: An avulsion fracture is a break at the site where bone attaches to a tendon or ligament. When this happens, the tendon or ligament pulls off a part of the bone it’s attached to.

If you’ve suffered a bone fracture, we can provide the care you need. If you have questions or need immediate treatment, Please visit Cheema Medical Complex, Mohali now.

Fat Embolism Syndrome and its Causes

Fat embolism syndrome occurs when fat enters the blood stream (fat embolism) and results in symptoms. Fat embolism most commonly occurs as a result of fractures of bones such as the femur or pelvis. Other potential causes include pancreatitis, orthopedic surgery, bone marrow transplant, and liposuction.

Cause of Fat embolism syndrome:
-Long bone fractures are the major cause of this condition. Fractures of ribs and pelvis are also responsible.

-Trauma caused by surgeries such as intramedullary nailing of the long bones, hip or knee replacements or even liposuction may also cause to release the fat globules into the bloodstream.

-Massive soft tissue injury, severe burns and bone marrow biopsy are other reasons.
