Asafoetida (hing)

Asafoetida or hing is an age-old medicine for stomach problems including gas, bloating, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), intestinal worms and flatulence; thanks to its anti-spasmodic and anti-inflammatory properties that help alleviate such health issues. Consume a dash of hing on a daily basis by adding it into gravies and dals. Another option is to dissolve some hing in water and drink it daily.

May Help Reduce Acne -

It's anti-inflammatory properties work together to reduce acne production. Whereas, its anti-bacterial properties inhibit the growth of pimples and rashes. All you need to do is to add multani mitti and rose water along with a dash of hing in a bowl. Mix the ingredients and apply it on the affected area.

Paw Care Of Dogs

Healthy paws are an important part of your dog’s well-being. Your dog’s paws bear their body weight and are essential for their daily activities. Dog paws are made up of skin, bones, tendons, connective tissue, and blood vessels.

Check paws regularly - Foreign objects like pebbles, weeds, thorns, and bits of glass can get lodged in paws. Try to check your dog’s paws regularly, especially after being outdoors. Use tweezers to gently remove any debris.

Clean regularly - Wipe or wash your dog’s paws as soon as they come in from outside. In winter, this will remove any de-icing products or ice that has gotten stuck. Snow turns into balls of ice that get stuck between their paw pads. A cloth soaked in warm water and gentle massage can help loosen the ice.

Intense licking - Dogs occasionally lick their paws as part of self-grooming. But if the licking is intense and constant, there might be underlying health issues. These include injuries and pain, allergies, dermatitis, or parasites like lice or fleas.

Moisturize - If your dog’s paws get too dry, they can crack and bleed. Only use moisturizers that are meant for dogs. Those meant for humans can make their pads too soft.

First aid - If your dog’s paws have a minor cut or wound, clean it with an antibacterial solution, apply an antibacterial cream, and then wrap with a light bandage. Deeper cuts should be looked at by a veterinarian. These could indicate a bigger issue like a cut to the tendon.

Otitis Externa in Dogs ( Ear Infection)

Infection of the external ear canal (outer ear infection) is called otitis externa and is one of the most common types of infections seen in dogs. Some breeds, particularly those with large, floppy or hairy ears like Cocker Spaniels, Miniature Poodles, or Old English Sheepdogs, appear to be more prone to ear infections, but ear infections may occur in any breed.

Ear infections are painful. Many dogs will shake their head and scratch their ears trying to relieve the discomfort. The ears often become red and inflamed and develop an offensive odor. A black or yellowish discharge commonly occurs. In chronic cases the ears may appear crusty or thickened and the ear canals often become narrowed (stenotic) due to the chronic inflammation.

Ear mites can cause several of these symptoms, including a black discharge, scratching, and head shaking. However, ear mite infections are more common in puppies and kittens. Adult dogs may occasionally contract ear mites from puppies or cats that are infected. Ear mites create an environment within the ear canal that often leads to a secondary bacterial or yeast (fungal) infection.

Many dogs with chronic or recurrent ear infections have allergies or low thyroid function (hypothyroidism).

Nearly all ear infections that are properly diagnosed and treated can be successfully managed. However, if an underlying cause remains unidentified and untreated, the outcome will be less favorable. Several recheck examinations may be needed before the outcome is successful.

IMMUNITY

Immunity refers to the body’s ability to prevent the invasion of pathogens. Pathogens are foreign disease-causing substances, such as bacteria and viruses, and people are exposed to them every day. Antigens are attached to the surface of pathogens and stimulate an immune response in the body. An immune response is the body’s defense system to fight against antigens and protect the body.

You want to boost your immune health, you may wonder how to help your body fight off illnesses.

While bolstering your immunity is easier said than done, several dietary and lifestyle changes may strengthen your body’s natural defenses and help you fight harmful pathogens, or disease-causing organisms.

Sleep and immunity are closely tied.

In fact, inadequate or poor quality sleep is linked to a higher susceptibility to sickness.
Whole plant foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, and legumes are rich in nutrients and antioxidants that may give you an upper hand against harmful pathogens.

The antioxidants in these foods help decrease inflammation by combatting unstable compounds called free radicals, which can cause inflammation when they build up in your body in high levels.

Healthy fats like olive oil and omega-3s are highly anti-inflammatory. Since chronic inflammation can suppress your immune system, these fats may naturally combat illnesses.

Gut health and immunity are deeply interconnected. Fermented foods and probiotics may bolster your immune system by helping it identify and target harmful pathogens.

Added sugars contribute significantly to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease, all of which can suppress your immune system. Lowering your sugar intake may decrease inflammation and your risk of these conditions.
Moderate exercise can reduce inflammation and promote the healthy turnover of immune cells. Jogging, biking, walking, swimming, and hiking are great options.

Given that dehydration can make you more susceptible to illness, be sure you’re drinking plenty of water each day.

Lowering your stress levels through meditation, yoga, exercise, and other practices can help keep your immune system functioning properly.

Though some supplements may fight viral infections, none have been proven to be effective against COVID-19. Kindly consult your Doctor or Nutrionist for dietary supplement advice.

SUNBURN (धुप की कालिमा)

Summer’s here, and that means it’s time to head outside and soak up the sun. But along with the all those hours spent outdoors during the summer season, there usually comes one inevitable thing: sunburn. Fortunately for all of us, there are plenty of household items you can use to cool the burning, itching, and peeling that come with damage from the sun.

Sunburn, basically, is inflammation of the skin. One of the easiest ways to treat inflammation is to cool down the affected area. An effective way to immediately help sunburn, even while you’re still outside, is to hop in the water, whether it’s an ocean, lake, or stream. Dipping in and out throughout the day can help keep sunburn from worsening. Be wary of pools, as chlorinated water can irritate the skin more. You should also avoid directly applying ice. Although it may look appealing when your skin is burning, it could actually cause even more damage to your extra-sensitive sunburned skin.

Throwing a few heaping tablespoons of baking soda into a bathtub full of cool water and soaking for about 15 to 20 minutes helps minimize sun damage. Adding a cup of oats to the bath also soothes irritation and helps the skin retain its natural moisture.

Chamomile tea can be soothing to your spirit, but it can also soothe your sunburned skin. Brew the tea as you normally would and let it cool. When it’s ready, soak a washcloth in it and apply it to the affected area.

If you are allergic to pollen, you shouldn’t use this treatment. It may cause an allergic reaction in your skin.

As your skin is battling the damage from the sun’s rays, it needs moisture that it lost during your time out in the sun. If you aren’t already drinking your eight glasses of water a day, a nasty sunburn should be reason enough to get you to start doing so.

20/03/2021

Sweating is a natural process that keeps our body cool and purges it of toxins. The problem arises when bacteria present on our skin start breaking down the protein present in sweat, releasing pungent odour. That’s something we can all do without! Luckily, the solution to excess sweating and body odour lies in the kitchen.

Tannins present in tea can help keep the skin dry, preventing sweat formation and body odour. Use following remedies only twice or thrice a week as daily application can cause excessive dryness.
• Bring enough quantity of water to a boil. Add green tea leaves to the water and allow to cool. Strain and apply to areas prone to sweating.
• Bring a litre of water to a boil. Add 2 teabags to the water and allow to steep for 10 minutes. Dilute the solution by mixing it with your bath water and use it to bathe.

Vinegar
Both white vinegar and apple cider vinegar are effective in helping manage body odour. They work by changing the pH of the skin, destroying odour-producing bacteria.
• Dab vinegar onto sweat-prone areas using a cotton ball. Rinse after 10-15 minutes.
• Add 2 tablespoons of vinegar and a few drops of peppermint, sage, or rosemary essential oil to a cup of water. Mix well and fill in a spray bottle. Use as deodorant !!

For any underlying Pathology or infections, consultation and treatment are needed !!

23/02/2021

Pigmentary keratopathy/keratitis in the dog is due to pigment migration onto the cornea and is a frequent cause of blindness in the Pug, Shih Tzu and Pekingese.

The cause of pigmentary keratopathy is multifactorial. Corneal irritation from abnormally placed lashes, medial entropion (eyelids rolling in), and nasal fold trichiasis are common. Decreased production of tears (“dry eye”) and/or premature evaporation of tears is almost always present. Pigmentary keratopathy occurs in dogs with shallow orbits and incomplete blinking, especially the Pug. Chronic irritation may permanently alter corneal immunity as well because the pigment migration often progresses to areas of non-irritated corena if the problem is not addressed.

The pigmentation frequently progresses to cover the central corneal and pupil and eventually interferes with light entering the eye. Many owners are not aware of the problem until the animal becomes visually impaired.

Treatment is directed at halting the progression of pigmentation and correcting the inciting cause. Surgery is usually performed in dogs that have a good chance of going blind in their lifetime.

Significant results may not be seen for four to six months.
