Today is World Su***de Prevention Day.

In India, the su***de rate has climbed from 9.9 per lakh in 2017 to 12.4 per lakh in 2022, marking a steep rise in lives lost.
Shockingly, student su***des now account for 7.6% of all cases, with Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, and Madhya Pradesh contributing nearly one third.
Almost 50% of su***des among Indian youth (18 to 30) stem from emotional stress tied to family, relationships, or marriage.

It is not just data. Behind every number is a young life that felt unseen, overwhelmed, or stuck in silence. Especially for students, exam pressure, unrealistic expectations, and societal stigma can form a perfect storm of despair.

What we can do together:
โ€ข Start tough conversations: Ask, listen, stay present
โ€ข Break the stigma: Normalise therapy, helpline calls, and emotional support
โ€ข Spot the signs: Withdrawal, fatigue, hopelessness โ€” small shifts can signal deep pain

Today is World Literacy Day ๐Ÿ“š and while we celebrate the power of words on paper, letโ€™s also talk about the power of words in our hearts.

I often see that many people can read and write fluently but struggle with emotional literacy; the ability to identify, express and manage emotions.

Why does emotional literacy matter?
๐Ÿ’ก It builds healthier relationships
๐Ÿ’ก It reduces stress and conflict
๐Ÿ’ก It helps children and adults seek support instead of suffering silently

Think of it this way: being literate with emotions is as vital as being literate with language. Without it, we may read books but we fail to read ourselves.

Letโ€™s nurture both kinds of literacy because only then do we raise individuals who are not just knowledgeable but also emotionally resilient.

Last week a teenager told me, โ€œI studied all night for my test, but my brain just felt blank.โ€
Her parent later admitted, โ€œI kept telling her to work harder, but I forgot to ask how she was feeling.โ€

Moments like this are common and they remind us that mental health shapes learning just as much as effort does. Here are five ways students and parents can support each other:

1๏ธโƒฃ Set realistic goals โ€“ Break big tasks into small steps. Progress matters more than perfection.
2๏ธโƒฃ Prioritize sleep โ€“ A rested brain learns faster and manages emotions better.
3๏ธโƒฃ Limit comparison โ€“ Every student grows at their own pace. Focus on personal progress, not someone elseโ€™s scoreboard.
4๏ธโƒฃ Keep conversations open โ€“ Ask and listen without judgment. Sometimes being heard is all thatโ€™s needed.
