On 30th October, 2016 a 42 year old gentleman got hit by a firecracker in his right eye which resulted in immediate pain and bleeding from that eye. He was brought to Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital on 9th November, 2016. On examination by Dr. S. N. Natarajan he had absolutely no vision in the right eye. Various parts of his eye were filled with blood and an ultrasound also confirmed the same along with a retinal detachment. Under very grave prognosis he underwent a surgery (corneal surgery with repeat vitreo-retinal surgery done by the retina team Dr. S. Natarajan, Dr. Chinmay and Cornea team - Dr. Kavita Rao) to remove all such accumulated blood and to restore the retina in position in order to give some hope for vision. However, the cornea, which is the anterior transparent part of the eye, was stained by the blood over several days and the internal structures of the eye were also damaged to a large extent. Hence further visual possibility remains bleak. Although an iota of hope still exists in his mind. Today his eye still remains blind due to the firecracker injury.
Firecrackers can cause a variety of eye injuries resulting from minimal to maximal damage to the eye. A celebration of happiness should never turn out to be a life-long grief. Hence, in overall public interest it is wise to avoid firecrackers as far as possible.
